    Default Ogallala Bay Rum...

Haven't heard anyone mention the Ogallala Bay Rum line of soaps. That's what I use, the Bay Rum and Sandalwood scent. It lubricates wonderfully and I can shave ATG with no problem. Also, the scent is great and lasts all day if you don't want to use any aftershave! You can find it at ogallalabayrum.com. Ray

As a newbie I have used the following and here they are in order of preference:

    1. Mama Bears Sandalwood Vanilla
    2. Crabtree and Evelyn Nomad
    3. Tie: Col. Conk Almond and VDH glycerin (although Col. Conk has a somewhat better scent.)
    5. Col. Conk Lime.
I can get a good lather with the Col. Conk, but it takes more work.Mama Bears is crazy good!

I like to use The Gentleman's Refinery shave cream with mama bear's awakenings soap (menthol, tea tree, peppermint)

    Its a great mix.

I second the Floris soaps. Great cushion, easy lather, lovely scents. I love the Elite, and it treats me very well during the fall/winter months. Its scent is a bit too heavy for spring/summer, so I switch to Muhle's soaps (which are apparently the same as EJ). I like the Aloe Vera scent. Light and clean. They're a little tougher to lather, but allow tons of comfort.

Huge +1 on the wet alum block too.

If I had to ditch all the rest, Mitchell's Wool Fat would be the keeper - it suits me better than anything else. I find the following well suited to straight shaving as well (no particular order):
    Palmolive
    Tabac / Irisch Moos
    Speick
    Cella
P.160 (but not too often, this one can be an irritant, unfortunately)
TOC Aromatherapy (a Google search should deliver the goods on this one, but I doubt anyone would be prepared to import it to the US. For my money, this is the best smelling soap of them all, and a solid performer - it's the only non tallow soap I've come across which delivers the quality of lather I've come to expect).

Veering a little off topic, I was recently sent a sample of DR Harris lavender cream which was a pleasant surprise. I wouldn't normally reach for a cream to use with a straight razor, but that one certainly does the business.

To me, Trumper's shaving soaps seem to be custom-made for SR shaving. The skin does not get too slippery, so stretching the skin for the razor is easier than with most other soaps. The slipperiness of Colonel Conk works better for DE razor shaving though. The Trumper soaps also foam up to produce a nice lather very quickly, and the skin feels nice afterward. For SR shaving I have found nothing better. Trumper's soaps also smell very good (the rose soap is a favorite of many people)

I think Colonel Conk is very good at a much cheaper price. I have yet to check out Gentlemen's Quarter, though.
