Thanked: 9If I had to choose just one soap - it would be totally OK w/ me. Tabac would be one of my top 2 contenders for this spot. However, I have not tried some of the high-end soaps so maybe this could change. Won't change soon, most likely - as I have been using 1 soap for the past 6 months and it has at least as much left in it...
Cheers

See, I just couldn't bring myself to use something in which I had such a love/hate relationship with. I wish I could!
Sorry, Ron, I had to let my wife win one! The slivers of Tabac I shaved off your puck at the meet took a bullet for me and went in the trash. If she wouldn't have been home at the time, I would have definitely ran downstairs and gave it a lather. So close yet so far.
Although I agreed with her that it reminded me also of lysol and hair spray, I didn't think it was so horribly offensive that I wouldn't have tried a shave or two.
There was one soap that I didn't even give a chance, it was a cake of Van Der Hagen something or other in which the cheap cologne smell was so strong I could taste it for about an hour after smelling it. I chucked it. I just couldn't do it.

Thanked: 335Chris,
Have you tried the Marvy soap (vanilla-almond) yet? I can't imagine your wife not liking the fragrance of that soap as it is much, much different than the Tabac's Lysol-Aquanet-Right Guard-Old Spice-like aroma. It's a good thing Utopian likes it, as with his ability to stretch soap, the Urn of Tabac should last about 14.2 years.

Thanked: 85Based on everyone's recommendations, I picked up some of the Castle Forbes Lavender. It truly is exceptional. I could not believe how much lather it makes, and how easily. I put a dab in my mug, about the same size as I've been using with other creams for one shave, and so far that little bit of Castle Forbes has lasted through three days of shaves. It smells very nice too.
I have also been using the Leatherneck shaving cream from the Gentlemen's Quarter. While it does not make as much or as nice lather as the Castle Forbes, it smells great!

What to shave with?
Hello all -
Right now I use off the shelf shaving cream. I am very particular about my shaving cream, because I break out VERY easy.
Questions are: would shaving with mug soap help lessen the chance of a break out?
What does everyone else use to shave?
Does anyone else deal with this problem?

I don't have sensative skin, but from what I've read, you'll probably need to see what works for you through trial and error. Generally, you might want to try a soap with less "stuff" in it. AOS makes an unscented soap, and if it performs as well as their EO soaps, it might be worth a try.

Shaving Soaps Success
All the soaps made will never live up to their potential unless the WATER IS SOFT! I use rainwater (when or IF that is possible). I suppose that distilled water would also allow plenty of lather. It is even better when heated to approx. 120degreesF. We are too cheap to buy and maintain a water softener.
I bought many soaps from holli4pirating and liked thm all. My favorite: Pirate's Cove Menthol. My son bummed it from me. He shaves his head (mach III) and claims that cooling feel in the mornig is the feel of victory...PIRATE'S COVE MENTHOL!

I have chronic, terminal, acne. I find that I break out much less when I use any mug soap, as they have fewer pore clogging ingredients in them than all but the most premium of boutique creams. TGQ soaps, MAMA bears soaps, and The Arizona goats milk soap company have been great to my skin. Any of them combined with a straight shave and alum treatment and I get very few pimples in the shaving area. I now do my whole face with the shave brush and lather followed by alum for a nice wash and acne treatment. scent doesn't seem to matter, its the quality of the base that seems to count for much more.
