Are you referring to the sandalwood shaving soap? If so then you can't go wrong with that pick. I have some and I love it. It can be a bit tempermental to get a great lather, but once you find the right combination you will not be disappointed (at least IMO).

I don't think it matters. TOBS is top notch, the cream should be just fine. I'm a soap guy, so the TOBS soap was a given for me.

I just received some TOBS sandalwood last week. I am a noob too, and can only compare it to Col. **** bay rum, and the canned goo.
That being said, it smells great. Not too strongly scented. The sandlewood scent is something I'm sure you'll recognize. It must be a component of many colognes and aftershaves.
The soap itself is much faster to lather than the Col. Conk and has less of a "slimy" glycerin feel when rinsing off.
    Hope this helps.

Most people prefer their cream to their soaps. I have that cream and really love it.

I love the Sandalwood scent in general. Mama Bear makes Sandalwood Vanilla which is even better. I haven't yet tried TOBS but I heard it's good stuff. I'm generally a shave cream guy, but you can really get soaps to lather like crazy with a good badger brush. I have some vintage blades brand triple milled stuff, it's great, smells good too. I get it damp, take my already damp brush, swirl it around the soap a bit, go to the scuttle and a minute or two later, BAM. I have a bowl full of crazy lather....I just ordered some of the Mama Bear Sandalwood. Everyone raves about it, so, I'll give it a go.....
