    As Tabac has been mentioned here alot, a similar soap made by the same manufacturer is Irish Moos. Performs much like Tabac, smells like Irish Spring soap a bit. Fairly cheap for the shaving stick at $15, which seems to last a very long time. AOS, while overpriced I agree, is a great tallow based soap that has a good fragrance and even better performance.

    I agree, Mitchell's Wool Fat works great. I have oily skin and a thick beard, and it doesn't let that slow it down.

    A thought, I switched to a boar brush from badger and got better results. YMMV...

    Big +1 for Mama Bear soaps. I personally like them better than all of the "better" soaps I've tried so far - Tabac, MWF, GFT, etc. Those are all great too, and I like to rotate them in, but I've been on a huge mama bear kick lately. I love the scent variety and they all lather and shave awesome.
