Fools are very ingenious, nothing is proof against them.

A combination of good manual dexterity, a sharp razor, decent soap and diligent practice will work.

It is hard to pinpoint the reasons why you are getting inconsistent shaves, or at least not without additional information. Depending on the product you are using, the water:soap/cream ratios may be a problem. This is probably the most common reason for failure.

The way that these oils work is by lubricating skin and whiskers, the excess left on the skin arguably has no additional benefits. If you wipe it off, which a lot of people do, it is better to avoid materials that would leave residue behind, like toilette paper. A washcloth should work fairly well. However, if you use a product that penetrate the skin, applying only a tinny amount (2 to 3 drops) and massaging your skin for 30 to 60 seconds until it goes away, you would probably have an excess to wipe off.
