Only the can would guarantee foolproof results. Any other soap/cream, good or bad, would require some lathering skills. In addition, soap/cream performance is modulated by the quality of the water you use. Probably the best way to go about choosing the product that is right for you is to visit the review section and making an informed decision: Shaving Soaps/Shaving Creams Reviews - Straight Razor Place Forums

Same applies for pre shave treatments. One important thing to consider is that if you chose an oil based pre shave, you may want to get one that can throughly penetrate the skin. You only need to use a small amount of these to obtain good results. Remove the excess before you shave as the excess oil would make shaving (stretching) more difficult and even dangerous.

I wounder if my inconsistant shaves is due to that. I have been using a preshave oil. What do you wipe the excess with? I dont want to wipe what i need away.

More important that what IME is how. I had been using a shaving brush for over 30 years but didn't really know how to create a good lather until I saw Mantic's videos on youtube. For years I just lathered on my Dove face soap and did the face thing. Learning how to lather in a bowl with quality shaving soap was a real breakthrough for me. So do a search for Mantic's lathering on youtube and check it out. You'll be glad you did.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Default Foolproof for me...

is Omega shaving soap, a moist (not dripping, but squeezed and flicked X 3) brush of any kind, maybe a little (almond-sized) dollop of cream (any brand, but keep it pure and try the Omega in a tube), swirl soap X 45", add cream to bowl, start mixing with loaded brush, then add distilled water (2-3 drops at a time) until the peaks begin to fold over and the lather looks slick, maybe a total of 20 drops, and you should be there. Perfection. During the shave, add a little water before each pass and swirl 10". Perfection redux.

Other folks will have other preferences, and I'm sure other processes work well. But everyone I've given this advice to has found it worked for them.

I am 100% with Jimmy on this one, you may develop a preference in time, but its skill as much as anything.

Hi Nicknbleeding. +1 on alraz and jimmyhad advice. As for the brands it will be preference, which is up to you. Imho, I love Mitchell's Wool Fat, and Tabac soaps. Creams: Taylor of Old Bond Street, and Truefitt & Hill are awesome creams. Also a lot of people here rave about Castle- Forbes creams, I haven't tried them but I hear they are superior creams, I'm going to purchase a tub myself, soon. Try then and see what you think. Adding a couple 5 or 6 drops of glycerin oil will turn your cream and soap combo into a uber-lather, this always works for me. Good luck.

Look through the various reviews. Get an idea of what has worked (for performance) for others. Then it really gets down to personal preference. There are followings for many of our vendors. Look in the vendor's corner forum below. Find something that fits your budget and try different vendors and products until you find what you like best.
