Thanked: 530Thanks. Obie! I intend to try out the Truefitt and Hill creams, along with Fitjar, and Castle Forbes... however, having only ever used soaps, i wanted to get a tub and puck of TOBS before diving for only the cream, at a large price... I know TOBS is high quality, so it should tell me if creams are for me, or if I should stick with soap, or if it's a rotational thing... then I'll plan my purchases from there

I have sandalwood TOBS soap, and Almond TOBS cream.
Both are high quality IMHO, however I prefer the soap, due to the scent and my preference towards soaps; plus it sits nicely in my shiny s.steel soap bowl, whereas cream is cream - you can not put it into a nice container like you can with a puck, so Im stuck with that off white plastic TOBS tub!
This thread reminded me that I have that almond cream...I'm gona give it a whirl tonight..

Thanked: 4I have been using the T&H sandalwood cream and really like it. It lathers easily, and comes off the brush easily. I am gonna try some of the samplers of the different creams from all the various manufacturers.

For creams I have both TOBS (Rose) and T&H (1805 and Trafalgar). I have found no appreciable difference between TOBS and T&H. For soaps I exclusively use TGQ. Price, performance and scent are unmatched. Mama Bear has a large following here too...

+1 to getting travel size or samples. It's an inexpensive way to test out a lot of high end products without breaking the bank.
Slightly off topic - Can you make good lather with JUST shave cream? It seems I only see people talking about using soap alone or making uber-lather with soap and cream.

A couple of points to consider:
I have used both Taylor's and Trueffit & Hill and although both lather well, I like the conditioning of Trueffit & Hill better. Some of them (T&H), however, make my skin dry, which is no surprise considering how sensitive my skin is.
if you are interested in a sampler, I would go with something like this rather than a sampler from a single manufacturer: The Shave Den Store (Powered by CubeCart)
Sure, you should expect different essential and fragrance oils to perform differently but these differences would probably be smaller when compared to completely different formulations. It is like going to a car dealership and asking to test drive the same car in 3 different colors, well not quite but you get the idea... ;-). I would advice against buying a shaving product based on the scent alone.
BingoBango: Yes, you can use creams or soaps alone to create lather as long as they are good. Uberlather is mostly used to elevate the performance of 2 less than optimal products and emphasizing the good qualities of both creams (cushion) and soaps (slickness).

May just be me, but I find I get a slightly thicker, longer-lasting lather from T&H creams than TOB creams (And, contrary to what I expected, I REALLY like T&H Trafalgar scent).
Anyhow, why not head over to The Shave Den forum store and order samples of some T&H creams AND some TOB creams? At about $3 per sample (4-6 shaves per sample) you can't go wrong. I think they're closed until after New Years but if you're not a rush it may really be worth considering...John

Thanked: 12I also think you should get a sampler from The Shave Den. I just finished up a large order of samples (20+). I had some T&H and some ToBS amoung many others. I'll say that the T&H 1805 was, by far, my favorite. Yes, the scent played a role, but I like many of the scents. The T&H cream lathered at least as good as the others. ToBS was one of the other creams that I felt were perhaps the equal to T&H (the others that impressed me were the Crabtree & Evelynn samples).
I've tried the T&H creams alone, and they do well. I still prefer uberlather. I disagree that it's only done to make up for soap and cream that is lacking. I doubt anyone would argue that T&H creams are top of the line. I got a great lather from it alone, but I still prefer mixing it with soap.
Like the poster above, the biggest difference I found between the T&H creams and other brands was how long the lather lasted. The others seem to "go flat" mug while in the mug in between passes.
I'm about to order some T&H 1805 cream and AS Balm. I just wish they made a soap to mix with it Now I'm researching unscented or mildly scented soaps to use with the 1805 cream.

Thanked: 1I know this is coming late, but I've found that T&H, while smelling great and feeling great while shaving, leaves my face very dry. That's not to say that it will do that same to you, but that's my two cents.
