I can only add to the comments about the Palmolive Shave Stick. 44p at my local Asda store (think it went up recently to 48p - sock!), but Tesco has also done these for 22p on promotional periods. Might seem strange at first rubbing it on your face, then using the brush to lather it up. Worst case though if you don't like it, throw it or use it as a hand soap!
+1 also on the Connaught Shaving site. Used them and recommend them highly.

I've got the brush and the soap. Ditched the brush for my great great grandads old boar brush (big difference) but its a good one to start with as it does the job.
The soap I quite like and have nearly finished my first tub. Will buy it again (also have some Edwin Jagger sandalwood and use the WS more). I quite like the smell of the WS soap and it lathers quite nicely.

I have a tub of the soap and it smells really good, the brush was my first and I still use it, I have a badger I have never tried because the WS brush does what I am looking for, a good buy for under $5 Canadian and the soap is under $4. I feel it is better than the Williams or Col. Conk
