Thanked: 84That was the first soap that I ever used, and I agree, it works great.
Since then I have got lots of fancy soaps and creams, but after reading this I think I might bust the VDH out.
I do have a question about melting it though.
I want to melt some and put some EO in it for some nice scents, what would be the best way to go about melting it?

Melting VDH
I pop the puck out of the blister-pack and into a bowl or mug. In my home microwave, I give it about 20 seconds and check. If it's not completely melted, I hit with with a bit more. No harm in doing this a little bit at a time. You don't want to boil it, I assume. I actually do about 4 at a time in a bowl.
Some soaps don't melt and re-congeal well, but VDH Deluxe does very nicely.
I did about a dozen packs, and after melting, poured in some bay-rum and poured it right back into the blister packs to cool.
I do 2 pucks into my shaving mug so the soap doesn't rattle around in the mug.
I expect I could add some glycerin too for more of whatever glycerin does for the soap.
Enjoy!

I just posted a review of VDH Deluxe in the Reviews forum. Feel free to comment there if I have something wrong or missed something.

I make überlather when I shave. At first I used Williams because it's inexpensive and made great überlather no matter what shave cream I used it with. Then I saw VdH soap in Walmart and gave it a try as you did. Great überlather and as you mention, it melts easy (Williams does not). That made me a convert.
Maybe I'll give the VdH a try on its own one of these days.
Namaste,

Thanked: 84I just went and melted me VDH puck and mixed in Grapefruit and Lemongrass EO (Smell incredible by the way) and I'm wishing I would of waited an hour longer to shave now, haha.
I put a little bit of Glycerin just to see if it will make a difference at all.
We shall see.

Thanked: 0I picked it up the other day along with a VDH brush. Total price: 12 bucks. It doesn't have any bells and whistles for sure, but it makes a solid lather and it does the job well. Mixing in some EO is a good idea. I don't want to spend 40 or 50 bucks just so my cream can smell like cedar or sandalwood. Glad to see that I'm not the only one using VDH and that others are liking it as well. I mean...two bucks?! Can't be beat.

The VDH Deluxe is going for $1.54 per puck at Walmart. I'm not knocking the others. I use MWF from time to time, and it's an awesome soap too. It also looks like it goes a long way, so probably the price looks pretty reasonable stretched over several months.
Then again, 3 months use of VDH has so far cost me about $2. I am sure I have not gone through 2 pucks, and due to my slow learning abilities, I've experimented and tinkered with lather and razors a lot since I started in April. If I just shaved once a day and that was it, I doubt I'd have used up one puck by now.
Still, I plan to buy and use others from time to time, and won't speak ill of them, because I like supporting the little businesses that make and sell their own distinctive soaps. Straight razor users gotta stick together.
