Thumbs up Pleasantly Surprised by VDH Soap

I kept seeing a green and white packaged shave soap at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS Pharmacy, etc. and for $2 a puck, I thought "why not." I figured it would disappoint, like Williams.

I was pleasantly surprised. The brand name is Van Der Hagen and it produces a substantial lather that holds up well. I have gotten several very nice shaves with it and actually am thinking of using it as my basic soap.

It comes in a re-closeable plastic blister-pack (inside the box) that is pretty good for travel, and they have a regular and sensitive skin version.

For anyone curious, I'd recommend giving it a try.

    I agree Mr Stone.

I would be willing to pay ten times more for a soap if it worked ten times better. But so far VDH gives me darn good service.

Really. I was so surprised that a $2 soap worked so well, I thought maybe I had done something wrong! I'm going to try some others, but I have 4 pucks of this stuff and I think it will be my regular.

Call me a boor, but I do find VdH to be a good soap for shaving. Does it have all the scent and frills of the more expensive stuff? No. Is it as luxurious? No. Does it provide a fine lather for shaving? Yes!

    Thumbs up Van der Hoggin'

I, too, was skeptical for the price, even though I'd made good use of Williams. I didn't like the name, Van der Hoggin'. I got the deluxe. Triethanalomine goodness. And we all know how much we love triethanolomine! Yum. It's good lather that lasts, good glide and protection. I like it. I gently melted mine and added essential oil of pine needle to give it a piney scent. It's scent is the uninspired, ubiquitous, floral bouquet of hand and bath soaps.

It is a good soap,I use it all the time in my rotation or if I'm at the store and just want to pick it up. It makes williams look horrible for basically the same price.

You should write up a review in the reviews section, it seems they're still missing this brand. It would be nice to add this ubiquitous soap.

Thanks for mentioning it. I use it as well-excellent soap! I use the version marked "With aloe vera and shea butter for dry skin-heavy beard." It melts in 20 seconds in the microwave and I pour it into my shaving mug to harden. This avoids having to chase a loose puck of soap around with my brush, while making lather. The lather is rich and softens my beard well.

    Default Another VDH Melter

I continue to enjoy VDH "deluxe" soap, which has the Aloe Vera and Shea butter added. As some others, I have melted it and poured it into my shaving mug. While it's soft, I pour a little Bay Rum AS in the melt for a bit more fragrance.

Amazon has a nice "Dozen Pack" that is very convenient.

This soap is a "no drama" product. It lathers up nicely, feels good, lasts long enough for three passes, and costs no more than $2 a puck.

I know there are better soaps out there.

I doubt there is a better deal.
