Thread: Pirate's Cove

Anybody use Pirate's Cove shaving soaps? How did you like them? They sure are priced right.

I used to use Pirate's Cove Bay Rum all the time, and I know of one moderator over on another forum who used to swear by it too. I've only used two scents. (Forgot what the second one was. Maybe lime? Always wanted to try the coconut.) Anyway...I liked it a lot. Great scents. Great price. And eco-friendly packaging.

Back in the day I had a bunch of their soaps. I really liked the scents, but I was not good enough at lathering to really be able to give any feedback about their performance.

I used their coconut and a bay rum soap from them a long time ago. I haven't used them in a long time, but I remember only a very slight issue with their lubricity. But then again, it was around that time that I still learning how to do everything, so... Other than that, they both had great scent and I generally liked them. I think I stopped using them because I just moved on to others, TGQ, Mama Bear, etc.

I have used 2 Pirate's Cove so far. Lime and coconut. Both are great soaps at a good price. I was a little disappointed in the scent of the lime,because it smells like lime candy, not a natural lime scent. On the other hand the coconut is probably the best smelling soap I have used. In fact, when I reorder this spring, it will be the only soap I have purchased twice. I got great lather with both scents. I want to try a couple more as well.

Well, I did buy 3 Pirates Cove soaps. Lime, Rose, and Cucumber-Melon. My wife right off the bat didn't like them. She said the sents are to stronge. She has a point, but it does not bother me. One, my sniffer isn't as good as hers, and I think a lot of soaps loose their smell very quikly, so I kind of like that. Oh, and she said, get this, " Buy the more exspensive stuff, some times you get what you pay for." She's really into skin care. But I don't believe she gave me the go ahead to buy the good stuff. Well anyway, she got me feeling that this soap can't be any good, heck, it's only $3.00, it's gotta suck. Well, This soap give a rich, thick, smooth lather. I can't beleive that I'm getting such a nice lather from a $3.00 puck of soap. This one gets my bang for the buck award. Give em a try, you too might be surprized.

I thought I’d drop my two cents in on this discussion based on my experience with these soaps. I ordered three of their soaps, at $3 – $4 per I thought I’d try a few; lime, rose, and mandarin. Shipping was quick and the packaging was fine with each puck wrapped in their own tissue paper. The first thing I noticed was the scents were not overpowering like some soaps but they were there. I soaked two brushes in preparation for the trial; one boar and the other a super badger. I tried the boar first thinking it would give a better performance on this soap. It was hard to build a good lather in my opinion, just about the time I thought it would start to build it just stayed flat. So I switched to the super badger and got basically the same result. I prepped my face the same way that I always do and applied the lather and while it went on nicely it seemed to dry rather quickly, so I waited and within 2 - 3 minutes it had dried to my face and the lather that was in the bowl had dissipated too. I wiped off, rewetted my face, built lather again and shaved with it to see how well it worked as a cushion… it didn’t. After a single pass around the face I had to switch out and use another product just to get a decent shave in. It seemed like it performed like a body bar would. Even at this price point I expected something a little better.

OK you guys, I just ordered three pucks from Pirate's Cove. Coconut, Rose, and Bay Rum. I shouldn't click on these threads. Great prices though.

i actually have nothing to add. i thought this was about Pirate's Booty.

I felt that I possibly hadn’t given this soap a fair shave after re-reading a couple comments here about it really needing water so I brought it back out and really wetted it down. And here are my amended comments:
I used the same two brushes; super badger and a boar bristle
I used my scuttle rather than a soap bowl
I used about three times as much water as usual with a puck

It started slow but once it got going, the lather built quickly and full. The lather broke down somewhat as before but running the brush around the scuttle again brought it back to life.
I still think that the soap dries a bit faster than my other soaps and IMO it does not provide as slick a lather for shaving as some of my other soaps but it is better than I first encountered.
So I am amending my comment about its lathering and its overall shavability. I will be keeping this soap and adding it into the rotation.
