MasterMason, my friend, you ask a big question. Let me see if I can give a big answer:
Martin de Candre, Provence Sante. Savon du Midi, Joris, Institute Karite, Trumper, Truefitt & Hill, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Mitchell's Wool Fat, Scottish Fine Soaps, Klar, Cella, La Toja Manantiales, eShave, Spanish Fig, D.R. Harris, Penhaligon's, Valobra, Fume, Arko, Dr. Dittmar, Dr. Selby, Mike's Natural Soaps, Mama Bear, SRD . . . I'm running out of breath. You will do well with any of them.

That is a big question. I'm normally a shave cream guy, so a soap has to really impress me.
Some of my favorites, in no particular order are:
Martin De Candre, DR Harris, Pre de Provence, Any of SRD's soaps, Mama Bears, Prairie Creations, Nanny's, Mitchell's wool fat, L'Occtaine, P160, Czeck and Speake 88.
Now, if you want to venture into shave creams:
Xpec
Castle Forbes
Truefitt and Hill
Taylor of old Bond st.

Thanked: 8I guess it's actually cream but I just took a flier on Taconic Tequila Lime and find it whips up to a great lather with a very pleasant scent.

But on your own terms, meaning look into what you buy to make sure. Don't just throw away money because everyone is suggesting brands.Shaving with facial hair is like a golfcourse. It's a challenge of rough and fairways. You are the skilled greenskeeper of your face?

Thanked: 4Just look for one that tickles your fancy, I think, and don't be too quick to judge the soap -- a lot of it is the user.
I'm a couple of months into the practice. First soap I got was DR Harris. Seemed rich and smelled nice. Seemed to have the necessary qualities. But my razor tended to get stuck and skip. So I branched out and found a cream-type to mix in, and shaving got better so I thought that must be it. I didn't want to experiment anymore. Then this morning I decided to go back to the DR Harris all by itself.
Well, the previous "deficiencies" in the soap seemed to be gone! My first shave that I would claim to be BBS. The soap hadn't changed, but in the course of a couple of months I guess I learned a few things about shaving and mixing up lather.
So I'm going to try different things and not be so quick to decide what "works on my face"

Thanked: 25I’ve used George F. Trumper Glycerin Shave soap in Almond Scent for about 20 years and love it. I give it 5 stars. I should probably try some other soaps but I’ve been so satisfied with the Trumper I just stuck with it. It’s availabe at straightrazordesigns.com
