IMO a soap can make the difference between a good shave and a great shave. For one, a good soap with good lubrication and cushioning, can cover a multitude of sins with your blade. Be a good 100% vegetable or one with lanolin (cheep fat) or other animal fat, it will give good glide to the blade (slickness) and protect you from the blade as it come in contact with your skin (cushioning). Scents is something you would have to figure out for yourself.
To me these are good value soaps: Tabac, Mike's Natural Soaps, Razor Rock, Cella, just come to mind, that are much better (to me) than VDH (I think that's the soap you are using). There are better or with different scents that I like and are just as good, but more expensive. Good luck Double O
