Actually, that's a good point. I keep all of my soaps in their boxes, except for the Trumper's Rose bowl, which I've had since I started this hobby in 2005-6!!

With the exception of soaps in their original packaging, i just give them a smell. Even if i don't remember what it is by smell i will all know whether or not that is the soap i want to use

My method is quite simple: I have five soaps and three creams that I use, and I'm willing to add maybe two more to that before I use up anything (or get rid of anything otherwise). And all of those are either in their original container or in a distinctly individual one.
And besides that, everything Palmolive is green. Quite hard to confuse those with anything else.

I only use MB and those have a label so easy to remember.

I try so many soaps and creams it isn't funny. I go left to right. I have a large bathroom with a walk in closet that's become my shave den.
Most of the soaps in rotation are out on the counter, I have two tier chrome shoe rack with ceramic tile on top for a flat base. The walk in closet holds all the creams, again, left to right. We have assumed control !
