Default Settle down with my preferred

    Gentlemen:

I have wet shaved for a number of years and gone through a vast selection of soaps and creams. Little by little, though, I find myself settling down with my preferred and not replacing my stock of the others. Not that those on the way out are low quality soaps and creams. No, all are fine soaps and creams. They just have not made the preferred status for me — for various reasons. Tabac, De Vergulde Hand, Fitjar, Klar, Taylor of Old Bond Street, Trumper, Truefitt & Hill, Penhaligon and scores of others will be retired once they run out. What will remain on my preferred list of soaps and creams, barring a magical new entry, is as follows:

Creams: Xpec original, Castle Forbes lavender and Santa Maria Novella.

Soaps: Martin de Candre, Mitchell's Wool Fat, Joris, D.R. Harris variety and Provence Sante Verlaine.

Any thoughts on settling down with your preferred, gentlemen?

Stay well and have a Happy New Year.

I'll have to come up with a preferred list someday, but first I'll have to actually use up some of my stock - which will be sometime next decade at this rate!

I am just at the beginning so to speak. I have many more that I would to try. I am glad tho that most of you have had the opportunity to try many different kinds and have a preferred.
I always like hearing about different brands. Glad to hear that you truly have something that you know is a good thing. Thanks for sharing.

Well, over the past few weeks I've been having a clear out of brushes and razors, attempting a few fragrances now, but soaps, well that will prove to be a challenge I think. I seriously need to give it my best shot though!

I love stumbling across these threads. It's like a new chapter of the "wet shaving for dummies" book every time. I keep hearing good things on the Xpec. Any chance someone could give me the quick highlights on what's so nice about it?

    Scent and performance, 'nuff said!

I'm on the other end of the scale, timewise, but also keen to whittle down to 2 or 3 favourite creams/soaps, that lather well, work with my skin, nice glide, no rash and lower down the list, have a nice but not too strong scent. I have used Proraso and Crabtree & Evelyn Sandlewood soaps for a number of years wet shaving, but a couple of months ago, things got more serious when I started straight razor shaving :-). I picked up both sample packs of Geo Trumper and TOBS and have been trying one by one, with nearly all but a couple of TOBS sensitive skin products and the standard GFT, to go, which might add to the list below. The rest, although terrific creams, have not liked my skin in some way.

So far, my short list, is:

Creams: GFT Sandlewood and Eucris, TOBS Shaving shop, TOBS Sandlewood.

Soaps: GFT Eucris (favourite scent!), Proraso (green)

Well, just starting the soap/cream journey and so far have not found one that would not do a decent job. I have tried MWF, Cella, Vitos Red, Tabac, DR Harris Arlington, La Toja, Williams, Arko and a half dozen creams including Proraso and Musgo Real. Call me crazy but as of now the only one that would be on my list of preferred soaps is Arko. I don't mind the scent one bit, lathers easily and in almost any kind of water I have had to use, is as slick as any I have tried and does not dry my face. I am sure there will be a few more by the time I am done sampling more soaps and creams.

The ones I usually end up applying are Proraso Sandalwood creme and Tabac soap. The soap sees much more use than the creme. Oh, and for face lathering the creme is brilliant. I also stack Martin de Candre, Crabtree & Evelyn, DR Harris, Mitchell's Wool Fat soaps, as well as some others, and a few nice creams like l'Occitane Cade, Erasmic and others, and on occasion it is still nice to bring them out. I don't mind either of them, they all perform fine. However
