Thanked: 0Dove for shave soap
I like the expensive stuff as much as the next guy, but I just tried this and got a really great double pass shave. Take a bar of Dove bar soap (I used the men's, but I'm sure the basic Dove will work fine) and nuke it for a couple minutes in a microwave safe container. When it's melted, pour into mug and let cool/refrigerate. When ready to use, put a few light squirts of glycerine (available at Walmart) and a little hot water and work up lather. Very little fragrance, so doesn't get in the way of your favorite aftershave stuff.

Dove for shave soap
It works there are some members that do similar stuff with other soaps cause there skin can't handle most other soaps.
I just can't see doing this when I can go pick up a puck of vdh deluxe for a buck and change at Walmart.

Thanked: 0No doubt. I think the extra glycerine makes a difference tho, and it's only $4 +- for a bottle that will last a long time.

Thanked: 1195My Grandfather uses handsoap as lather, and not even with a brush; he just lathers the bar in his hands, rubs it into his whiskers and shaves. I don't ever remember seeing him use anything else, not even canned goo, and I'm pretty sure he can not fathom why I would spend the money I do on soaps, creams, brushes etc when a bar of ivory costs $1.
Personally, regular hand soap wouldn't cut it for my sensitive skin, but perhaps when I'm pushing 90 my skin might be a little tougher

Thanked: 1185If you're enclined to shave off the soap aisle of a grocery store, give Clearly Natural Glycerin soap a try. Locally I can get Honeysuckle or Aloe Vera at just about any supermarket but I'm pretty sure health food stores/ hippy stores would have some of the more exotic scents. It also comes in Rainforest, Lilac, Cucumber, Lemon, Strawberry and Peppermint. It really does work great as a shaving soap, thick and slick, doesn't dry out. I normally load a brush straight from the bar and then either face or mug lather it. for ID purposes, it looks like this:
It runs a buck and change a bar and honestly works just as good or better than most any purpose built shaving soap I've triedLast edited by 1OldGI; 01-05-2013 at 01:36 AM.
The older I get, the better I was

Thanked: 0Haven't tried Lava, but we've all seen pucks that go for over $50. For that I'd want a Victoria's Secret model to shave me included.
