Soaps Dishes - To Cover or Not to Cover...That is the question??
Hey Guys,
I recently purchased some Wool Fat soap but did not buy the Soap Dish for it, instead I purchased a glass dish from Crate and Barrel for $2.99. The only problem is that it doesn't have a "top" or cover. Is there a reason why a soap should be covered?
I know it sounds like a dumb question I just figured I would ask.
Thanks!

What I've found as I kept buying more and more soaps was that I ran out of space for cups and bowls or what ever. Worse I lost track of what was in those bowls. The solution I found(copied) was to use a Surabachi for lathering in. The bottom of the bowl has fine striations that takes off just enough soap off of the dry puck. The soap stays dry and in its original packaging. Easy to store, find and remember what it is!

I cover mine. It just seemed like a
good idea but I'm not sure if it's
necessary.
Empty Taylor's tubs are great for MWF
and Tabac. They fit nicely and just screw
the lid back on when the soap dries.

I use an extra large coffee cup. Soap cake (puck) sits nicely in the bottom. Never covered.

Thanked: 3225I read here ASR Endorses: Pyrex Soap Storage Container | ASR about using 1 cup Pyrex bowls that come with lids to store shaving soap pucks in. I bought some along with stick on labels that I put the name of the soap on and labelled the containers. They comfortable hold the pucks and I know what soap is in it. Perfect for loading soap on your brush and then either face lather or use and extra large coffee cup to bowl lather in.

Thanked: 1195All my soaps are covered, it helps to preserve scent and prevent excessive drying/cracking. I should note that, after use, they only get covered after a drying-out period.
As for a cheap container & lid, sugar bowls work really well, are very inexpensive and look good in the shave den.

More stuff I gotta get at the Wal Mart.
I wish someone would have warned me about how expensive this addiction is.

Thanked: 1195Thanks zib, that's exactly what I was thinking of. You can pick them up here for a few bucks each at Wal Mart, Army & Navy or Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire for our non-Canadian members ).

Thanked: 43I have been collecting several different types and styles of soap dishes. Each container has its own character. It just adds a bit more to hobby.
If I think I might forget the identity of a particular soap I just tape the soap's label to the bottom of the dish.
