Naw, the real miracle on ice was this https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia....-hockey-series .
Bob
Not having a lot of hockey history growing up I missed that game series but I have heard the legend of it around the tribal fire. Once again I regret the time I missed. I'll have to see if I can find video of that series. Thanks for that Bob

Enjoyed a rerun last night on the NHL channel of game 2 of the 1987 Cup Finals, Flyers losing to Edmonton in overtime. All the great Oiler players were on the ice and its was fun to see a couple guys still going without helmets. I forgot that continued into the late 1980s. Stay safe everyone.
Us Pittsburgh people never get tired of watching Philly lose.
Sidney Crosby: I don’t like them.
Announcer: But why?
Crosby: Because I don’t like them.
We should be watching playoff hockey .....I need to see a good fight ...right about now....
I've been watching reruns too. Here it's Lightning playoff games from '03 and '04. Dave Andreyuchuk, Marty St Louis, Vinnie Lecavalier. Tonight I watched them beat the caps in the first round. God I love to see the Caps lose, especially to the Lightning. No offense to any Washington fans. Jaromir Jagr was still playing for the Caps. I guess the networks figure we all want to see our teams win big. Can't say they're wrong.
I coach 4 hockey teams during the season, and play on 2 adult league teams. I'm on the ice 9 or 10 times a week. Now it's been nothing since like February. Went from 6 days a week to nothing. Finally was able to get my 10U team on the ice Tuesday night. It was so nice to skate again with the boys, even to smell the rink.
FINALLY some hockey to watch. Come on August 1st!

Maybe I'm kind of a 'Humbug' but I'm one of the old guard who still believes that the Olympics should be ONLY FOR AMATEUR ATHLETES!
I never watched a single game of the USA's so called 'Dream Team'--
To me it all boils down to Money! And the Olympic Committee wants more of it and will do whatever it takes to bring it in.
I realize that some countries were entering so called 'Armatures' who they paid to only work on their sport but still overall most countries were on the up and up/at least as far as my limited knowledge is aware of.
I really doubt in modern times there was such a thing as an amateur athlete. The competition is so great that a full time athlete has to be supported somehow. To compete in the Olympics you must be doing it full time to build and keep an edge. If you are paid to do it or subsidised in another manner makes you a pro.
Bob
It has never really truly been all amateur but the 1980 USA team was a bunch of college kids, many of whom were headed for the NHL. But let's not forget the USSR team beat the snot out of the NHL allstar team.
To be honest I never understood why it was so important that they be amateur athletes. If the idea was to see the best athletes a country had. If the were truly the best they would probably do it professionally wouldn't they. That's aside from the fact that they would have to be sponsored one way or the other as Bob said so isn't it just semantics?
Edit: The big thing I think is an issue is performance enhancing drugs. That really is a big deal no matter how you slice it. It's there has to be a baseline and I think that just has to be off the table completely. It's a shame that that has become such a big part of so many sports. I knew a guy years ago who was a professional bodybuilder. He told me there are two kinds of bodybuilders that do steroids: the kind who say they do and the kind who say they don't.
Tell that to Jim Thorpe--his Olympic Medals were stripped from him because he's played two summers as a semi pro baseball player before he competed in the Olympics. Playing baseball had nothing to do with the events he won in the Olympics. 30 years after he'd passed away his Olympic Medals were reinstated to him.
I'm sure he really appreciated the gesture. I hope it gave his family some comfort.
I would be very interesting if people like Thorpe or Jesse Owen's could see today's Olympics and let us know their thoughts.
I'm not disputing what you're saying really Roy. I guess my point is even as far back as the ancients people have idolized athletes. Fame is a funny thing. If you're famous you don't need money because people trip over themselves to give you things. This is very ironic too because people of great fame could afford to pay for the things people try to give them. Great athletes have always had benefactors. I'm not saying that there are not some who play by the rules. In fact I think the majority of people probably always have but there have also always been cheaters.
So it's The Kraken huh?

About time they got "Kraken" picking a name. It's only been a year and a half?
So a little more than 12 hours before hockey starts again.!
Watched penguins/flyers yesterday, wasn't the crispest hockey but it was hockey nonetheless. Happy to have it back, interested to see how they go from not playing, to playoff hockey immediately. Like not driving for 6 months then going straight to drive a formula one car at indy.
It was weird to watch with no fans in the stands

Bolts KILLED it in the exibition game. 5-0 GO BOLTS!
OH MY GGGOOOODDDDD!

Avalanche on the power play with less than 0.1 seconds gets a puck across the goal line to win a tie game over defending Stanley Cup Champions St Louis Blues in the first round of playoff qualifiers. Talk about photo finish.

Pardon me if I crow a little but.....
Attachment 323028
Sorry in advance to any Caps fans but I really, REALLY wanted the Bolts to beat them. The Capitals are the Lightning's arch-nemesis and totally humiliated them in the playoffs a couple of years ago. BUT...not today kimosabe.
Attachment 323029
I know it's not exactly the same with no fans, games in the middle of the day on a week day and an incomplete season but there is so much hockey on right now. I feel like a coyote in the lamb pen.
My penguins sadly already whimpered out for the season, waited so long for hockey and already over for me.
Been there. That stinks
My Bruins got that bad taste in their mouth.....I hope they take it out on Carolina ...Bigleeee !
Bruins have a bunch that are getting long in the tooth also. Good news is they're seasoned and used to coming back. I'm totally stoked that the Lightning get a rematch with Columbus. They are a much different team this year. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. Only thing is the game is at 3:00. What the hell?!? How is anyone supposed to catch the game in the middle of a work day?
Attachment 323265
Was supposed to watch my Bruins at 8 pm tonight...was all excited ! But it got moved to 11am tomorrow....some how a 6 hour hockey game delayed their start....
All I can say is HOLY CRAP! 4th longest game in the history of the NHL and the most shots on net ever. Columbus goalie made 85 saves on 88 shots. Unbelievable. AND MY LIGHTNING WON!
Sorry to any Islanders fans out there but...
Attachment 324362
Hey, here's your ass. I'm telling you. This could be their year. Tonight it was all Lightning, all the time.
Iam pretty much fed up with all pro teams....I hope they all fail. I don’t watch sports for political protests...they can do that on their own time.
Yeah I get all of that but the fact of the matter is they are going to do it no matter what you and I do. Apart from a societal shift which punishes them resolutelty (which we all know is NOT going to happen) they're going to continue to do this. As long as there is skill there will be idle worship.
Meanwhile ....some fine hockey to watch tonight.
Attachment 324851
I'm sorry who was that again?
Attachment 325125
Been waiting for a while for this.
Anybody been watching the world Junior championships? Man there's been some really good hockey in this session. Team Canada is just off the chart and team USA is right there with them. If team USA wins against Finland tonight it will be the US vs Canada in the gold medal round. That should be spectacular to watch. The US has the best scoring forward and Canada has the best goaltender.
Edit: let me further clarify that. For skaters the number one and two are an American and a Canadian respectively. For goaltenders number one and two are a Canadian and an American respectively. That should make for a fabulous game to watch.
