RIP. Alzheimer's is a tough thing.
11 cups? Damn that's a bunch!
Off topic but I was just thinking how much I miss Don Cherry from Hockey Night in Canada, when we get it down here. Is he on the air somewhere else or did he take a forced retirement for saying basically nothing at all?
He made some kind of comment about some foreigners not wearing the poppy or something like that... something insensitive which is so unlike Don Cherry right? I think he was considered bad juju after that. I still like the way the Canes ran with his bunch of jerks comment. That was a classic.
So one thing I love about hockey is how you just never know what's going to transpire. As a for instance the Lightning beat the #1 team in the league (Bruins) last night then turned around and lost to the #31 team in the league (Redwings) tonight. Ya just never know.
You gotta miss the suits though. He had the old lady curtain line. It was always interesting.
There is a funny Don Cherry story about when he was fired as the coach of the Bruins and Harry Sinden the GM. Gerry Cheevers was the goalie during a 5-2 loss (can’t remember to whom). Sinden asked Cheevers what happened and Gerry replied, “Roses are red, violets are blue, they scored 5, we scored 2”. Cherry laughed out loud. Sinden couldn’t fire Cheevers, so he fired Don instead.
To me he seemed like a buffoonish curmudgeon, sort of an Archie Bunker of hockey.
That's what was so funny about the " bunch of jerks" comment. There he was being this grumpy old codger calling them jerks for something everyone else seemed to like and they turned it into a nickname.
I sort of miss him. He was kind of cartoonish like Yosemite Sam
Exactly. That's all I meant with my earlier post.
Oh, I got your drift. I mean, how could you take that guy seriously, at least in the last few years?
There's even a Best of Don Cherry on you tube - ridiculous stuff.
The Canadiens had a huge pool of talent to pick from...in the old days.....Not so much today...as they haven’t sniffed a cup in 27 YEARS.
93 was the last cup for a Canadian team. Shame since hockey was invented by Canada
You say that like it's a bad thing Bob. What fun would a NASCAR race be if one car was a model A and the other was a Dodge viper. What makes it cool is that all of them are virtually the same and the win goes to the driver with the most skill or endurance. Actually I'm not a racing fan but I think the analogy sticks.
Edit: oh and it is pretty clear that the modern form of ICE hockey we watch today was started in Canada. Other similar games were around first but Canada get the honor on this one...as much as I would like to claim it. Just wait though. With all the junior leagues around and inspired by the Florida teams you just wait. In the next 10-15 years there will be a good number of NHL players from Florida. There already are more than you would think.
Case in point

The city where I live has been producing NHL players for a long time now. The city now has a population of about 108,000. It may take Florida a while to catch up. ;)

Yeah I highly doubt Florida will ever catch Thunder Bay even being a state of over 20 million.
Plus the name Thunder Bay is pretty hard to beat.
And here we go.

Sorta puts the don't worry be happy attitude about Covid 19 to rest. No reason to panic but at least take this seriously personally and take all the reasonable precautions you can to try and flatten the infection curve this thing has.
Bob
So as to keep this thread about hockey and not about the coronavirus I'm going to post a conversation I had with a friend of mine who's an epidemiologist in another thread.
So to add insult to injury now there's no hockey to watch!!!
A lot of peole are talking about and taking it seriously but I would not say there is any hysteria. Yea, the disappearing toilet paper routine has hit here just like in OZ and other countries.
If you want something to mull over I'll link to an article that was pointed out by another member. I hope they don't mind.

Well, at least they made all the archives games free games. That's something. Fortunately I have NHL Premium so I can get them anyway but it's nice to be able to catch up on games (besides Lightning games. Seen all them) I missed.
