I've never been to a live hockey game, just see it on telly sometimes.
I was never brought up on Ice Hockey, I was a hooker in the school Rugby team though.
I can ice skate but in the UK we use the skates with the teeth on the toe (rented them actually) so compared to most of the N Americans my ice skating skills are not that great, especially now I'm 60 and don't bounce like I used to.

The last time the leafs won the cup….my GTO was Brand New….1967
Sweet ride! My brother had a 65 (pretty sure it was 65. This was back in the 60s) that looked just like that, same color and everything. 389, 6 pack, 4 speed, Hurst shifter, positraction I'm pretty sure. He said it would boil the tires right off the rim. I was a little kid and I remember it scared me because it was loud although he.tells me that was probably his Chevy II with the 327.
I was gonna vote for the Panthers cause I want to see Jumbo get a cup, he was the man for us in SJ forever, but we let him down. He hasn’t been playing though so I don’t have a favorite, but I hate St.Louis so hopefully they don’t make it lol. Might have to pull for Carolina since I’m here.
Congratulations to the Rangers fans out there. That was a heck of a game 7 win in OT. I hear you horndog. For me it is the Penguins I hate (no offense to any fans). I too love Jumbo. He is hockey in a nutshell and he is definitely due. I was hoping the Lightning would pick him up but their cap was maxed. Obviously I always pull for my team but barring that I have to pull for the home state rival and in addition for Joe Géant Thornton as I heard him called watching a match in French. Sometimes I watch the French broadcast to refresh the French I studied and have now lost from lack of use.
What I love about the Canes is that Bunch Of Jerks thing. That is so what I love about hockey. Take a chirp, own it and turn it around. I've heard hockey fans say they don't like the smack talk. I don't understand that. That's like saying you like to hunt but don't want to kill anything. Maybe it's just me. Although I think that is why Florida teams do well. Florida and hockey are like matched book ends: in your face, take no prisoners, go for the throat.
I can’t believe the Pens puked up a 3-1 series lead….to the Rangers….lol
That's how the playoffs go. You can't ever count any team out until the final goal is scored and the last second ticks away. Especially post salary cap the teams are so even and the best of 7 series gives so much opportunity for corrections that it's almost more about coaching and strategy than players and line combinations.
Sharks had LA in a 3-0 hole back in 14 and lost that series…. Still hurts lol. That’s the playoffs though never over till the fat lady sings. Wish the NHL.tv or ESPN plus didn’t blackout the playoff games, it’s a real let down for those of us without a tv package.
Hockey is a rough game anyway even without intentional hitting. I think the hitting and rough stick play adds another dimension to the game. If a player thinks he's going to be hit or stick checked it can change the way they handle to puck and cause them to lose advantage. On the other hand, if you foul another player then you go on the penalty kill which is another skillset as is the power play. Generally the PP works against a team so they want to stay out of the box. So they have to balance how much force they use. Then there's the aspect of drawing penalties to gain the advantage. It's another series strategic layering. I don't like the rough play for the sake of it necessarily but more because of how it affects the play of the game.
Well you can't call that criminal assault for the same reason you can't in boxing. There are 2 willing participants who go into it knowing the chances and accepting the outcomes. I don't agree with you Bob but I understand what you mean. I have these same conversations with my brother in law. He feels that it is "permitted by the establishment but should be abolished." They tried to do away with the rough stuff and attendance and viewing went way down.
As I say I don't watch it for the fighting. I know some people do. However, if the players go into it knowing the penalty and excepting the consequences as well as the dangers and as long as the officials enforce the rules and don't let things get out of hand then let them play. If they don't want to accept those risks then they could always play another sport. That's my opinion. I know it's not everyone's. You may disagree. I know a lot of people do.
I don't know much about hockey, never played it even but I can't help thinking that some of the gloves off is staged to make it exciting to watch.
When American Wrestling started to show on British TV years ago, my eldest son who must have been about 6 at the time was absolutely convinced it was real. He definitely thought it was possible that they could do things to each other including hitting each other with a chair and not bleed, or pass out, not even limp :rofl2:
A bit of choreography goes a long way.
Go Canes!!!
Good luck to the Canes. That would be a fun series to see them play.the Bolts in the next round if everything falls that way. That sure was a good series last year.
One thing I've discovered is not a good idea is trying to hone a.razor while watching a game at the same.time.
Been an Aves fan since 1995 and day one, looking pretty good in the playoffs, been wearing my old hats too hehehe
The Avalanche is a tough team and hard to beat at home especially. In particular for teams whose home ice is at or below sea level. That 5000 ft + is a heck of a home ice advantage. They had a good tight win last night.
Good luck to them Glen. We may see your team in the final.
Hopefully the Avalanche will smother Tampa
Good luck to them, and I mean that without sarcasm or snakiness. My prediction is Avs vs Bolts in the final. The Avs have a big horme ice advantage but if the Lightning keep playing like they have been (the Panthers were the highest scoring team in 25 years and the Bolts kept them to 3 goals in 4 games[their regular season average was 4.2 goals per game]) they will win another cup.
Iam now a Rangers fan ..for the rest of the season. Seeing that my Bruins are golfing.
Congratulations to the Rangers and their fans. This should be a fun series coming up.
Here we go, ready for tonight
Aves all the way Baby !!!!
High scoring game. I think the Avs are going to win this series. My prediction is Bolts either sweep Rangers or win in 5. Avs sweep Oilers. Avs vs Bolts in the final with Bolts winning in game 7; close series won by a hair.
I guess we'll see though. One thing you learn about hockey though is you just never know.
8-6? Damn! That's a high scoring game. Personally I like the 1-2 or 2-3 games.
Even so... So far so good for the Avs.
Oilers ain’t going away ….
It’s not a series until someone loses a home game
I'm sure they won't go away. Toronto didn't go away either. I still think it'll be Avs in a sweep. Maybe 5 games but I'm sticking to the sweep for now
Whoever wins it's been some really good playoff hockey this year.
I don’t get to see that Conner McDavid kid to much….I just caught the last 8 minutes of the game. Have to invest more time to watch him.
Well that was a shoot out :)
But hey the Aves won :p
Did you see that offsides play …that was allowed …then a goal….That was offsides all day long. Oilers got the shaft.
A beauty in New York tonight…Rangers up 4-2 ..going into the 3rd….Go Rangers !
Rangers putting the wood to Tampa tonight. Them Front running Bolts have no answers tonight
Yeah, I was waiting for it. I'm a fairminded and even handed guy. I make no excuses. The Lightning took an ass whipping tonight and a well deserved one. They played like the cast of My Little Pony On Ice. All credit to the Rangers. They came ready to play.
I'll say this though. Andrei Vasilevskiy is 17-0 after a loss. The Rangers better continue to bring their A game because it's a long series and the Lightning have won 2 cups in a row.
Yup….if the Rangers get game 2 ….and take all their magical powers away…I can see Tampa folding in 4 …like they did against Columbus a few years back . It’s Gonnah be tough to beat Igor ,the way he’s playing. Whens the last time Vaseleski let in 1/2 dozen pucks ? They beat him like a rented mule …high short side is his chink in the Armor.
Well you know Igor didn't make any of those goals. Anybody can have an off night, especially after a 9 day nap. Look at their records and I think you'll see Vasi's is better in the playoffs. 17-0 after a loss is pretty darn impressive. So is 6-1 shutouts in a series clincher.
I wouldn't be so sure about "folding" after a 2 game loss, which, by the way has not happened yet. You don't win two cups in a row by folding.
But, as I said before though. You just never know in the playoffs.
