Looks like almost the whole NHL is playing next Saturday
By my rough count 28 out of 32 teams are playing ???
Okay somebody explain this to me, this might be why I have never really paid attention in the past
4 Teams going into the Semi Finals ??? So all four teams can be eligible for the final ??
Canada and Finland are 1:1
Sweden is 0:2
USA is 2:0
Today Finland vs Canada
If Canada wins in regulation, it would have five points. Because Canada beat Sweden in the opening game, it would hold the tiebreaker edge
If Sweden wins in regulation and ends up with five points. Canada would advance to the final.
If Finland wins in regulation, it would have five points. Finland also beat Sweden in the round robin, so it would advance to the final.
If Finland or Canada wins in overtime, the winner would have four points and would have to await the result of the USA-Sweden game.
That is the weirdest thing I have heard ??? Why would USA have to play again if they are already in the finals ??
So with Canada 4-0 in the 3rd it looks like USA vs Canada Rematch ??
So if Canada wins then we are at 1:1 between USA and Canada do they have to play another game ???
Weird Eh
Bob
That is a head scratcher. Saturday after USA vs Canada they said US doesn't have to play again till the final.
Beats me.
Here's another thing that stinks. Russia isn't included because of Ukraine. I guess I understand the reasoning but I just hate when sports get tangled up in this stuff.
It certainly would be more interesting with Russia in it just with their goalies alone, Vasilevskyi, Shesterkin, Bobrovsky, just among the top ones.
Just for starters the team with Vasilevskiy, Kutchreov, Ovechkin, Panarin and Malkin off the top of my head would be a hard team to beat.
Granted I have only played in Round Robin events Tossing Darts, but it has always been double elimination
I just don't see how this makes sense UNLESS USA loses to Sweden tonight
Even then their points system makes no sense
Okay I guess this is why I have never watched it in the past.
It is all entertainment.
In a ways similar to nascar and the datona 500 I watched yesterday.
They stop the race at least 2 times and bunch things up to make it look better.
If you are a lap down why should you be alowed to join the lead group?:boohoo:
Well you would be in the minority. They are listed as the under dog in sports betting. I think it will be a tight game with Canada pushing hard to avenge their previous loss. A lot depends on whether the host of injured player return which includes the Tkachuk brothers, Vincent Trochek, Charlie McAvoy and Auston Matthews.
If I were a betting man I would still hedge on USA. The team I wouldn't bet against would be Russia. For a minority contributor they are top heavy in big talent. I look forward to sering how this pans out in Milano Cortina next year.
I don't even know that it ever was much less history. To Tim's point, corruption is a universal and has been throughout history. People love to talk about the good ol' days but the reality is that there is no such thing. Ideals are goals not facts. If we're lucky we might get close but wherever there is something good, something bad latches on or I think Martin Luther summed it up pretty well, "Wherever God builds a cathedral satan builds a chapel right next door." Religious or not you have to recognize the analogy of bad accompanying good.
Okay this STILL doesn't make much sense
The US and CA face off Thurs
IF big if Canada wins that makes them 1:1 in the series, how do they they consider that a Championship !!!
Why did the US even have to play Sweden in a gimme game ???
Things that make yo go Hmmmm Why did I ever look at this with a critical eye, I knew this was going to push my OCD into hyperdrive
I should rephrase my previous comment. I don't think you would be in the minority. You would be disagreeing with the betting odds. Many people have made a lot of money that way. I'm sure Canada will come out with a vengence. They certainly have plenty of star power; star power that isn't injured. It will definitely be and intereating and fun game to watch. I of course support my US team but good luck to them as well. The competition makes it fun. Good sportsmanship makes it stay that way. I certainly want to be part of the lofty ideals camp and promote transcending all the negativity.
So I went back and what they actually said after the USA vs Canada game was that the US didn't have to play again to get into the final. I must have misunderstood. I guess they played again for Sweden's sake since it wouldn't be fair not to give them a chance to win. Not that I wanted USA to lose but I am glad Sweden doesn't go away winless...not sure how I reconcile those 2 positions but  ya know.
As far as the scoring, I guess that the scoring only counts toward getting you to the final. The final is almost a separate competition with a winner take all outcome. I guess think of it like the playoffs. The regular season points don't apply to the playoffs, only to getting there and placement.
I get that Paul
But they defined it as a "Round Robin" style Series
It is a moot point now since the US lost to Sweden
But as a round robin series I just don't see how it works fairly now
I hate when my OCD itches, what is good for Razors, is bad for this hehehe
Edit: I probably won't watch :P if Canada wins I will be yelling at the TV "Okay now it is 1:1 when is the final game"
I don't know past that...... I guess they mean we're going to play it like a round robin until the final. Honestly I didn't know a round robin event could have a final but, their game, their rules I guess.
I heard the cheap tickets are around 1100 USD.
I personally would never pay that much to watch a game.
It certainly is an expensive outing. We go to Lightning games every once in a while but mostly preseason games. It's the same teams, same venue, same overpriced vending and same electric atmosphere but a fraction of the price.
We also go to minor league games which are a LOT cheaper. Nowhere near as fast paced or high adrenaline but still pretty fun. We just went last weekend and good seats were $50, spectacular seats were $115. Even pregame tickets to Lightning games are slightly north of that.
As far as these events go? Too rich for my blood. If I had disposable income I might for an extravagent splurge but even then not on any regular basis. I enjoy it just fine from my couch.
Was informed by the Hockey Nutter Wife "WE ARE watching the game tomorrow"
She cracks me up sometimes, that wife of mine
Oh, EVERYONE in my house is watching. Everyone I have talked to is watching, even people who aren't fans. All this smack talk by the players also is like pouring gasoline on a bon fire. It has an almost WWE air to it.
To all you fans on both sides of the border, good luck to your team. Ought to be a game to tell your grandkids about.
I decided to see about watching it but I don't get ESPN.
Oh well I am sure I will hear about it and see highlights tomorrow.
The girls high school state tournament has started here.
Congratulations to team Canada and all their fans and supporters. That was some fine hockey, a hard foght match. You better all appreciate your goalie. He gave you a chance because the USA team were all over him like a bad suit especially in overtime but he kept enough of them out to give them a chance to win.
It was a Great Game right up until we lost hehehe
I couldn't believe the the Shot counts were nearly identical through all 3 periods
OT the US put 7:2 on net but the one that counted went in :(
Great saves from Canada
Sometimes it is not the volume of shots on net but how good they are. Then there is always luck too. Yea, the Canadian goaltender was exceptional especially in OT. Then there is always luck there too. Happy we won. Now trump can go puck himself over the comments he made earlier in the day regarding the game and Canada becoming the 51st state plus tariffs.
Bob
So track back to how this series was setup
Drove the wife to work yesterday so we only had one car at the Bar hop last night
In line at the Coffeeshop she says "So they both won a game, why is Canada the "Winner"
I gave her the line I heard about nothing counts before the Final game yada yada
Wife "That is just stupid"
I am not the only one hehehehe
Oh you'll never get me to say it wasn't stupid.
"I don't make the news. I just report it."
You would think all involved would have agreed to the series format and found it comprehensible before play began. Would there be as much made of the formatting of the tournament if the US had won? :hmmm:
Bob
Yes Bob Canada won, we got it
Another question about the stupidity of the Series rules
So why did the US even play Sweden, they didn't need a win, it accomplished nothing toward the final, the smart move would have been to concede the game and rest the US players for the final.. I knew this thing would bug me it simply made no sense
But here you are 'Answering" anyway
ps: So far only YOU care about how political it is, that is YOUR problem not mine, go complain to YOUR leaders.. (I will gladly discuss politics with you should you want to open another thread about it)
I am asking about the stupidity of the rules, if you don't know WHY perhaps you should let it go
pss: Canada Won Bob
Again why did the US team even play against the Swedes since it didn't matter, does anyone have a logical reason
Yes, you were puzzling about format, I gave the only answer I could. I doubt anyone on this forum could say why it was set up the way it was. You have to go to the horse's mouth and email the organization that agreed to it. Otherwise, you will keep going in circles like you have one foot nailed to the floor.
It becoming political is not a problem for me as I understand why and have no need to complain to my leaders. To discuss politics in any greater detail is likely against forum rules and guidelines so I won't.
