I don't think you *need* to do it but from my experience it (1) helps to keep the leather soft and flexible and (2) warms the leather up so that it helps with the draw. The main reason is number 1.

As for the linen, I rub that to help smooth it out a little, sometimes my linen is a little longer than the leather so I rub it to smooth it flat.
