I know it's a sad fact of life for some newbs but with that logic you should also buy a razor you don't mind damaging because any time you catch an edge on the leather it is quite likely it will also damage the razor.
My recommendation would be to practice your dexterity skills first by learning how to flip the razor or a even rolling a pencil or butterknife. Then go & make a strop out of a sheet of newspaper & secure it with a clip so you have a "practice strop". It is easier to practice the "roll" on the newspaper as it gives some support.
