If you really want to go "High Tech", you need something with a resistant rubber padding that will stick to slick surfaces and some kind of special material on top, design so that stuff glides easily. Washable under the tap with a nylon brush would be great also.

Cut a 3 inches wide strip off an old mouse pad (the one's not used anymore since the advent of LED and Laser mice) and the you have it.

If you buy a stone you can glue 2 strips together (fabric side to fabric side) you'll get a really stable base for you stone. This what I use for my slick as glass Swaty. In that case I used a 1/8 of an inch thick pad, normally these pads are closer to 1/4 inche.
