Smart move ?
Recently I was out traveling with my shaving kit for the first time.I had everything in my toiletbag including my strop.(yes I'm pretty new to straightrazors.)I tought it would curl up nice in my toiletbag(the strop that is)
But when I arrived and was unpacking my gear, the strop was bent on the middle.Right away it didn't look like a big problem, but when I tried stropping ther was a big bump on the strop where it was bent. The bump really dulled my razor no matter what I did.So I decided to try sanding it.I pulled out my norton stone, and really honed the strop. The ting is it really worked great, the strop got completly flat again. And the surface is smooth as ever with some stropdressing. So the question is,was this a smart move,or have I completly ruined both the strop and my stone?

No proble, with the stone. If it's clogged you can lapp it. Not sure aboout the strop. I would have used the strop dressing (or Neet's foot oil), put the strop on a flat surface and rubbed it hard with a smooth glass bottle.

You can pick onbe up here NORTON Flattening Stone - Woodcraft.com or google the name to find other suppliers on line. THere is also a thread on SRP noting hoe to use 400 or 600 sand paper. To summerise: put some water on a flat surface like a counter top, put wet/dry sand paper om water and flatten, wet the top of sandpaper, draw a grid on hone with a pencil so you can sopt low spots apply loght pressure lap using circular motions. Rotate the home seversl times to balance pressure and surface flattness.

Both should survive just fine. Many folks like to rough a new strop up a bit.
For a while now, I often start my lapping sessions (with new stones, both synthetic and natural) on a concrete block...
I usually follow that by a DMT 325 and/or 1200. Use plenty of water.
No.... I'm really not joking.Last edited by Sticky; 09-28-2008 at 11:26 PM.
