    Default Illinois Strops

The Illinois strops I see most mentioned on this forum are the 361 and the 827. Any one tried both and do you have an opinion on their relative merits.

I have a Illinois 992 that I purchased years ago, havent seen another one like it mentioned anywhere.

Also have a Caswell Massey Strop - scotch shell that has a Scotsman in Kilt playing bagpipes on top of strop. I think it was made by Illinois as the handle is like other Illinois strops I have seen.

The Price is now 32.95 plus shipping. This is still a good deal. The 827 has a very heavy draw due to the high nap of the leather. I use it on my heavier blades and to do the post shave stropping on all my razors. The linen is very different as it is a very stiff almost plastic feeling type.

I ordered one a couple weeks ago after seeing this. It's a whole different animal than my latigo strop but seems to be working great. I hadn't considered using the smoother strop for the hollows and the 827 for the heavier blades but it seems like a great idea.

I can't say I've noticed any difference with using the linen though? I agree it's very hard. Is there something that needs to be done to it?

    The linen is just fine!
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
