Using the oil from your nose is an old pipe smoker's trick as well to keep the bowl lubricated (so it doesn't crack from the heat).

Thanked: 9I have to admit, back then like a bonehead I tried the nose grease thing by rubbing my thumb on my nose. I dare say the results were not satisfactory , or , my nose is not greasy enuf. Rubbing a highly sharpened hand forged knife on the nose was not my idea of safe knife handling. (still isnt).
The pipe trick! now that you mention it I remember seeing someone do that. (think a pipe feels better than a knife or razor).
PS: SAhmm..I thunk the nose grease wuz frum the outside, but dont take mah word fur it.

I do a few pre shave strops on the palm of my hand but I always thought 'greasing' the palm involved cash not noses
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

I do it while shaving, if my lather gets a bit dry and gummy. Not the nose thing though.
I suggest using your fingers to transfer nose grease to blade, not blade on nose.
Something to think about: the oils and sweat we secrete are corrosive to steel, so...maybe not such a good idea to do that before you put a blade away.
Then again, who nose! *rimshot*

I wonder if someone could describe how they strop on the palm? I tried the other day and the very uneven surface puzzled me. I've seen others do this at incredible speed, but can't quite focus on which part of their hand or palm it's happening.
