I don't know about lard on a strop but it does wonders for a cast iron fry pan.

Man I feel like I am doing it wrong. I do exactly like Obie. I have never applied anything to my strop besides my palm before I use it. Am I wrong?

Someone might be able to find out what Ferrari, Maserati and Bugatti recommend for treating their leather upholstery.

There may be a recent post regarding that issue.

No, I don't think you are wrong. Keep it nice and simple — and natural. This has been my routine for years and my sweet strops are proof enough.

When I purchased an Illinois #827 strop, the vendor recommended applying an initial coat of Fromm's Strop Conditioner. Also mentioned this is the only strop that he recommended to apply an initial coating.

I applied the initial coating, a dime sized dollop of the stuff....helped work the strop in well as it shed quite a bit at the beginning...looked a bit like orange peel as another member put it at first.

Had another strop that dried out particularly badly, figured I'd apply some of the Fromm's to it and it brought it right back.

Haven't used any since, just palm rubbing, but the conditioner seemed to do what it was supposed to do...

Yeh I have used Nivea hand cream on my Big daddy strop last year to help break it in, as it was leaving a dry scale line on my blades and I found it worked well
I have also used lather on the strop to help break it in.
