Thread: CrOx

Hey all,

Is there a place to buy ChromeOx that does NOT need to be mixed with oil or anything before treating a strop? I wanted to paste one side of the webbing (I think I remember reading that this works nicely) that came with the SRD Latigo with Chrome Ox, as I remembered this morning how much I love touching up an edge once every 10 shaves or so per razor. Anyway, I don't trust myself with not screwing up the mixing process (nor do i really feel like doing it).

Help would be appreciated.

It doesn't need to be mixed. The powder is so fine that rubbing it into a surface dry works well. I've never tried an oil mixed chrome paint on canvas but I don't see a need for that over rubbing dry powder on canvas.

I've found rubbing dry powder on smooth leathers like latigo works better for me than rubbing in oil mixed chrome ox. Why? the dry powder allows for the very light tint that is best whereas the oil mixed makes for a very opaque coating.

I do like oil mixed on balsa. Dry rubbed in balsa works. But, the oil mixed on balsa soaks in nicely and just works better for me.

Mixing is simple. There's no exact ratio needed. A very small amount, say the size of a pea or at the most a blueberry mixed with 1/2 tsp of light oil (mineral, honing, "household" oil) makes for enough "paint" to easily coat a strop. The idea is NOT to paint heavily and make for an opaque surface. That's too much.

Chris, would the Chrome you sell work dry on the "webbing" second strop being used as a second on teh SRD strops? The product description mentions that it works well with pastes. I didn't know if dry Chrome acts as a paste...just don't want to screw up the strop!

In no way would you screw up the strop by rubbing some dry chrome ox powder into it. If you're committing to putting chrome ox ANYTHING on a canvas or linen strop then you're already committing to that strop being green for life. Aesthetically chrome ox will make a strop green. Now as far as PERFORMANCE of dry chrome ox vs. paste, you'll get a heavier concentration or saturation of not only chrome ox but the carrier medium if you use some of the stuff in the bottle or mix it with oil. However, dry chrome ox absolutely will stick to the cotton or linen fibers and will therefore do it's job even if it's only powder. Worst case, if you DON'T like dry powder chrome ox on linen, buying and applying some form of chrome ox paste right over the chrome ox powder won't hurt a single bit.

Sweet. Thanks. I'll grab a couple packets from you, and paste one side of the webbing second, leaving the other side for daily use. I'll go through the classifieds.

I highly recommend getting the CrOx from Chris. I just received two packs from him and did two strops very lightly as suggested. I figure I have enough left for the next two to three years.

I did put the CrOx on leather one a small travel loom and a small travel strop I've had for years. It worked great one of the best shaves I have had. Straight off the 8K Norton and 20 laps on the CrOx and it was a sweet shave.
