George's strop
Is anyone familiar with using one of George's homemade strops from TQH?
I had pretty much made up my mind on the 316, but am having a hard time finding anyone who ships to Canada, so I'm thinking that George's might be a good strop for a good price.
What's the skinny?

Thanked: 2209A number of people from the Yahoo SRP forum have a strop from George and they like them.
I personally do not have one of his. I do have numerous others (none are for sale).
There seems to be different finishes on strops and some people like a hard, slick finish and other like a softer, more supple finish. Some strops are regarded as a "sharpening" strop and these usually have another piece of leather with a different finish that is used as a "finishing" strop.
I am not sure but I believe that Georges strops are the "finishing" type. Someone please correct me if am wrong.
There are several people selling strops of various kinds .

Thanked: 79Hi,
I have one of George's strops, and like it plenty; I bought it after reading some recommendations of his strops awhile back on the yahoo SRP (where my handle is jpfaster1-got tired of it and simplified for the new site!)
The strop I got has a canvas side (THICK) and a red leather side. The finish on the strop I have is one of the "hard slick" finishes and not the soft velvety type. The strop works very well; Unfortunately I have sliced and diced mine pretty badly-it helps to flip the razor BEFORE beginning the next stroke...Anyway if you were wondering if it was a quality strop, it is. A good 24" by probably 2 1/2" or 3" perhaps, and the canvas is the same size (worth the extra 7 bucks or so) Total cost was about 30 USD for me. A steal.

Thanked: 79Hal-the story gets worse. I sliced it up about a year ago, when I was newer on the yahoo site (but still had been around long enough to know better....) not only that, I had already sliced up a dovo rindleder as well as an Illinois 206.....
I was getting good edges, even got a Paki razor passing the hanging hair tests and shaving (once- which I now wonder why I even gave it the effort...) regardless EVERY SINGLE TIME I cut a strop it was due to overconfidence. Start stropping slow, then I would speed up-flip-hisssss flip hissssss flip hisssssss flip-sst flip ssst !@$%......
I've been able to for the most part save the strops, thankfully.
George, you still out there? my first strop from you may need a friend...

Thanked: 79Folks,
Just a heads up, after mentioning that I had one of George's strops (which I have since sliced up a good bit) Hal Wilson contacted me offline and I agreed to buy the leather from his from him. Well I am pleased and surprised, but not only did he not charge me for the strop leather, but would not even let me pay shipping. People like this seem to be getting rarer and rarer these days,
so Hal-
I got the strop today,
it hardly looks used at all! (I will remedy this, of course...)
and THANKS!
