Thread: Texture

Was having a nice talk in chat with puffah and a few guys but I had to run before all was fleshed out.

We can talk about ready made strops but I'd rather learn about how to make a better strop by getting to know more about "texture" how to get it, use it, change it.... whatever.

I have 2 straps: 2 inch by 12 inch. (hand american cow) the other is a similar size of deerskin which was home chrome tanned 25-30 years ago.
linen is a strip of old "canvas" web: hemp i think but maybe not. both are thin both sanded with 220 as i recall. fine and smooth nap though the deerskin shows less.

Kinda different but works well enough for me, but could be better i'm sure

Texture and other qualities that make a strop work better or needed in certain circumstances/-ideas?

Isn't it a lot personal preference?
I have a couple of old ones. Some of them I like, some of them I don't.
Soft and flexible is good for me, smooth surface as well.
Mostly I use a Puma hand held though. More the suede type and actually rather straight.

I have restored a few old strops. The latest one I tried something different and it worked very well. I sanded the strop using a 3x36 belt sander with a USED 400 grit sanding belt on it. The resulting texture is very good.
