    Default Stupid new guy question

Do any of you know if your basic chromium oxide paint from an art supply shop will do the trick for sharpening a blade, either on balsa wood or a strop?

I would go with this. Cheaper than buying a full container and enough to do a couple strops.

That's a good question. When your using Chromium Oxide for honing straight razors. The quality is what your after. There's a lot of it out there. What you want is .5 micron. Some stuff sold at woodworking stores have abrasive in it, that are almost 300 grit. That's what you need to be careful about. Some guys have done extensive research on this issue. ChrisL, a member here sells the Hand American powder, probably the best avialable in little 2 application packets for 5 bucks, I think. That's your best bet.

SRD has the big crayon Chromium Oxide. It's used by them and by Mastro Livi. It's easy to use, just color your strop, balsa wood or what have you. I have used both, and they work....You may ask the person at the Paint/Art store for an MSDS sheet. It will provide you with some eye opening info...You'd be surprised what winds up there.....

Straight Razor Designs CRO paste is 0.5 micron in size. Kremer Pigments offers CrO paste in 0.3 micron particle size. I performed some tests with it, and believe it is high quality...

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/strop...de-europe.html

It is used by some of the European straight razor users. It is quite affordable.

Even though I haven't used the Kremer Pigments enough to know whether I prefer it over the Straight Razor Designs CrO, I doubt it makes that much difference. My small amount of testing seems to indicate that the smaller Kremer particle size does polish a little slower, and a little finer. But, don't know if it is that significant.

Order the Straight Razor Designs CrO, which many here use, and you will be very happy. Order, the Kremer Pigments CrO, and you will be happy as well.

I don't know about the other sources of CrO mentioned by users here. But, I am sure you will be happy with those other sources also.

I use the green buffing wheel compound you can get locally at any Lowes or Home Depot...it's pretty much a lifetime supply for $3.

Thanks guys! I went ahead and ordered a packet from ChrisL. I figure for $4, if it doesn't work out for me I can just toss it and take the loss.

And I will know to go after the guys who recommended it
