    Default Gun Oil?

I'm looking to condition my strop with a little oil (and move around some chrome-ox paste to get an even coat), but there's a problem. I don't have any neatsfoot oil or strop conditioner.

I do, however, have some Hoppes #9 Lubricating Oil. Does anyone know how that might work out?

    NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! !!!!

That would not be good at all for a strop...
Hoppe's is a petroleum base cleaner...

Neats foot is IMHO the best, but barring that, any leather conditioner will work and even most hand cremes after all your hands are actually living leather....

And this is why I ask questions before trying things out on a newly-bought strop. Thanks.

I use Balistol to oil my razor.
For strop you can also use baby oil.

    Default Treating strop with oil

I have used olive oil on my strops with good results less is more. Put a little in a dish and use your finger and rub it in. I have also mxed with Diamond paste or Chrome ox on and spread on leather glued to wood paddle with good results using the same method.

Women have used olive oil for years on their skin, and it is the main ingediant on many lotions and creams, so if it works on living skin, can't hurt a strop.

I don't know bout that mate. I use Neatsfoot oil on mine.
I don't use gun oil on my razors either. Camellia among others would work well. Clove oil is rather pricey but some have used it and vouched for quality. Fromm strop dressing is another you can use.

Neatsfoot oil is actually a fat rendered from the hooves and leg bones of cattle. You can reasonably substitute other liquid fats.

Not exactly right. Yes, the oil itself is beneficial but like linseed & some others it tends to form a 'skin' over time which would not be desirable on a strop.
The other choices are better long term.
