Thanked: 335Depending on what oil was used on the blade, alcohol may not be the proper solvent; it may just work to help smear things around. So I agree on the dry paper/cloth wipe.

I use camellia oil. I wipe the blade with tissue run it under hot water for a few seconds and wipe a second time with a towel.
Then the strop and the shave.

Oiled Blades
My dear Bruce:
This is not your day. I, too, agree with you.
I wipe off the camellia oil from the blade with a Kleenex tissue and then strop.
Regards,
Obie

I use Mineral Oil and just wipe it off with toilet paper then strop away no issues at all. Just be easy when wiping near the edge of the blade.

Thanked: 31Most of the time, I rub some oil off the blade with my fingers, then rub the fingers on the back of my other hand, and repeat as needed . The oil on my hands will wash off during the shave anyway. Sometimes I wash the oil off the blade with some hand soap, but I am not sure if this is necessary.

Generally just wiping with soft paper towel works for me pre stropping but I'm a bit more OCD about not getting oil on my hones than my strop.
