Thanked: 0Razor "dings"
Hi folks,
I noticed that my razor makes "dinging" sound like if I hit it slightly with other metal object when I strop. Is this normal for it to make such sounds or there is something wrong with my moves?
Thanks!

Could be several things:
1, Is your strop nicked or cracked.
2, Does this happen when you flip your razor.
3, Is your razor cracked.
4, Is your strop clean, do you rub it down prior to stropping.
5, Does this happen with your cloth componet.
6, Has it always made this noise.
7, Might help if you describe your razor, strop and process.Last edited by wuff; 03-04-2010 at 04:31 AM.

no it's not normal. during stropping the only thing the razor should be in contact with is leather.

Thanked: 13247Ummmm are you talking about the ZZZZzzzzzzzing as the razor moves across the strop????
If so you must have a full hollow which is also sometimes called a "singing razor"
If not then yes somthing is wrong

When you flip the razor at the end of the pass are you slapping the edge down on the leather ? If that is it try lightening up on the flip. Just skim the surface with the edge and let the spine be the only real pressure point.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 4942Depending on your razor grind and width of blade, the razor will make many different sounds when stropping both leather and webbing. In addition, sometimes the sound starts off at a higher pitch and then mellows out after 10-20 strokes. There are hissing sounds and as Glen says zzzzzzzzzzzzz sounds and a bunch of others. Sometimes on the old wedges, there is almost no sound.
It you hit a piece of hardware on the strop and hear a ding, this is not a good thing. The stroke should really be more rhythmic without a lot of slapping of the razor to the leather with an easy turn to change directions on the spine.
Have fun,
Lynn

Thanked: 0It is 7/8 full hollow. It makes this sound on the first half of the stroke as hand accelerates along the strop and which disappears by the time I slow down at the other end. Basically I hear white nose "wsh-h" along the whole way, and l slight "zing" along first half way. It also sounds about the same on the canvas, with general noise being more low-pitch and "zing" being little bit more pronounced because of that.

Thanked: 0There is small nick in the end, but razor makes this sound before reaching that area.
No
How do I check for this?
Yes, yes and yes.
This is 7/8 full hollow, leather and canvas, and I am not sure I can really describe the process in any quantifying or qualifying way, besides that I slide my razor back and forth along the strop, trying not to put any pressure

If there would be some contaminant on the strop, it would only affect one strop I think. That leaves the technique or the razor. Could it be the edge lifting off the surface or the toe or the heel leaving/entering stropping area?
