Thanked: 522The only strops I ever nicked were 2 DubleDuks back in the 1960s and they have been sanded to the point where they are quite useable.. Since then I have been amazingly fortunate using the counting method just as a musician would count time while playing an instrument.
I have about 12 hanging strops and no nicks in about 40 years. Counting works for me. I have had many close calls but counting has allowed me to stop before the edge hits the leather. Again, I have been very fortunate............ 1and2and3and4........signed, LUCKYLast edited by mrsell63; 12-21-2010 at 06:07 AM.

I've noticed that the likelyhood of nicking your strop is directly porportional to the newness of the strop.

With all the strop nicks being reported, it would seem that many members could benefit from employing the principles of the rythmic count.
It works for Yo Yo Ma and Ogershok and it works me. Perhaps I will take a photo of my nickfree strops to prove the point. Please give it a try. Your strop will definitely thank you.............JERRY

1+
1+ on jerrys stropping technique i use the same technique that jerry told you guys about(he told me how to do it) and i have yet to nick a strop, anothe rimportant thing is to pay total attention to what your doing. Dont be worring about other things while stropping the end result is never pretty. The counting and keeping a rythem method is great way to keep from nicking a strop.

From this day forward, you must convince yourself that there will be no more mistakes because your rythmic count will force you to focus more intently than you have thus far.
I am sure that your have never cut any of your hones!!!JERRY

Thanked: 235With the quality of my honing if it were possible to cut a hone, I would have done it. Apart from this one stupid mistake I have a lot of faith in my stropping. But when it comes to honing I am only at the start of a very long journey.
