Thanked: 1936With the shapton 16, I would just go with 20 laps at a time with only enough pressure to keep blade where you want it to avoid overhoning. I think this is where many "mess" up with shapton gs stones. They are about twice as fast as a Naniwa SS & I doubt you need to go back to the more coarse stones...

Until I get a finisher, my regimen has been a pyramid routine on Norton 4/8, followed by 5-10 passes on CrOx'd linen, then 100 passes on colored newsprint, and finally 30/60 linen/leather. That regimen has been giving me some wicked edges lately, which have led to buttery smooth shaves. Some variation of the above, minus the honing, keeps 'em shaving sharp for a while.
There are many roads to sharp.

Thanked: 485Ta. Though the 50 laps worked well, the edge was nice and smooth and sharp. The last 15 or so were very very light. I've heard the Shapton is an aggressive stone, but then again the Swedish steel I've heard is hard.
In the future, I think I'll certainly take your advice though and stay at around 20 is that works!Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

Thanked: 485My Dovo strop is looking a bit tatty lately, so maybe I'll get a new leather one and use paste on the canvas side of the Dovo. I haven't tried pastes and things yet. Coloured newsprint? Why not B&W? I hadn't thought about newspaper; I used that once when i started and had no strop...

Thanked: 4249Carl i do use Crox'd paste on an old strop i have, it works well to touch up , and sometimes after honing when the edge
is almost there, but im curious about this coloured newsprint will definately give that a try, i mean what can it hurt!!!
Ive heard that some people use plastic grocery bag as fine sand paper so why not strop on coloured newsprint?Last edited by Martin103; 11-08-2011 at 06:32 PM.

Thanked: 4249I did another razor last night using colored newsprint, it just started to pull a little, 5 passes crox, 100 newsprint 30 linen,
75 leather test shave smooth, and that was a totally different razor sheffield, the other was a pyramid, it works pretty well to touch up for sure without getting all the hones out......Last edited by Martin103; 11-14-2011 at 12:58 PM.
