Thanked: 30Yea. I think I have a physical disability that will prevent me from being a honemeister. I have no way to know if the edge I put on a blade will actually shave another face comfortably. For S&G's I just did a blade and water shave. One splash of hot water and a drop of conditioner for prep. It didn't smell as good as when I use soap. It was however fine, and I learned a bit more about my facial hair doing it. That odd spot just under the chin, responds the same to XTG as ATG for virtually any ATG angle. Plus it looks cool to just see your facial hair pile up on the edge of the straight.
to the OP, you will be glad you did! take your time and work on one skill at a time. Just like the new shaver guide says, take your time and gain your proficiency in steps. It makes it easier on both you and anyone trying to help you when you have troubles.

A few things to try before running out and buying more hones:
Lap your hone
Learn a few different honing strokes
Get a cheap magnifier so you can see what the hone is doing
Use the magic marker test
Also learn thumb pad, nail tests
Learn the hht and how to interpret the results
Practice stropping a lot, critically examine every aspect of your technique
Post in the beginners forum, and hook up w a mentor
Read a lot and watch vids here
Consider a versatile hone like norton 4/8 before any other, get dad to pay
Shave with your razor as much as possible even if it sucks and finish with a DE
