CBN On Linen
About to pull the trigger on 0.1 CBN. Already have a leather strop to use for it, but has anyone tried using this stuff on actual linen (not felt or cotton)? If so, how have you found it to work compared to felt or leather or nanocloth or whatever? I'm really curious, but I'd hate to waste genuine linen if it doesn't work, since it'd be probably impossible to remove it once it's in. Love to hear from regular CBN users on this.

i dont know how to best use powdered abrasive on fabric.. it seems to hold some, but shed it over time, i think mixing it with some soap might manage to hold it better, but still wash out alright if you change your mind.. maybe someone else can provide some insight on, for example, chromium oxide powder v.s. chromium oxide paste.
anyways, this isnt about linens performance, but if you are looking for more fabric medium to work with abrasives go to the auto wreckers and get some cheap seatbelt fabrics..
if you get the kind where the fabric is sewn right onto the metal tounge of the buckle you can easily tie a loop of strong string/cord through the hole in tounge in such a way that it hangs flat without twisting to one side or the other.. not what you were asking about, but something else to consider.
i imagine linen webbing and cotton webbing will perform similarly when it comes to the use of CBN powder.. seatbelt may be a little different.

I never used it on linen. Only on balsa and suede like leather. I use the CBN coated balsa as a final polisher, the leather for use before and after shaving. Gives me a fresh from the hone feel every shave. Works a treat on both. To avoid rounding the edge I would not use it on hanging strops.

Thanked: 267I would be inclined to go with the rounding comment on a hanging strop because CBN is very fast cutting. I have personally found that on felt I get very good results when used like a barber's hone. I do about 10 or 20 laps, depending on the razor, anytime I need to even in the middle of a shave. Works extremely well.
Take Care,
Richard

Thanks to all! Well, the felt pads look good, but the reason I'm curious about a strop is for razors w/ bad geometry that need tape--I don't want to be adding tape every other time I shave is all!
As far as linen, I'm thinking that might actually degrade the edge @ that level, so I'd probably just do CBN (as needed) & leather only. Good plan, you think?

It stands for Cubic Boron Nitride.

Thanked: 2027Have been using .125 CBN on smooth leather, finished with my DMT 325 with amazing results.
Am reticent to use any woven material for pastes as I feel you get a rasping effect due to the peaks and valleys of woven material,(look at some under magnification) may be wrong tho.

Thanked: 1587You guys are so behind the times. I've just constructed a SHC (Small Hadron Collider) that fits on my strop. I refine the edge with it by bombarding the edge atoms with protons. Balsa is fine for the SHC as long as you cool it to within .5 of a degree of absolute zero, otherwise things get a bit hot. If you are going to use it on a hanging strop I would recommend kangaroo leather, being the strongest leather out there - just make sure that if you do use a hanger with a Hadron Collider that you hold it taut, or else you do run the risk of rounding the edge and (though slightly less probable) creating a rift in the time/space continuum.
Then I finish off with the Asagi.
James.
