.5 crox and .5 diamond are the same grit but the crox is a little smoother of a finish? does the diamond cut faster?

Yes diamond cuts faster in any grit size because it's made of sharp crystals whereas chromium oxide is comprised of rounded crystals which makes it cut slower. Check this link out for more info
