Thanked: 270Sometimes you stumble onto an easier way to do things.
By the way, congratulate me for my first trip with the straight razor and strop! I was about to grab the Merkur Slant DE but then ordered myself not to wimp out.
Anyway, at home, my strop is hung waist high because I thought that was the way to do it. In other words, I have always stropped perpendicular to the floor.
By necessity the only way I could hook the strop up in the motel rooms were by the hangers, which means I had to strop at a 45-degree angle upward. (I'm waiting for someone to tell me that this is the way I should have been doing it all along.)
The motel setup, that is stropping at a 45-degree angle upward was EASIER! I've been getting easy, enjoyable shaves on the road.

Thanked: 13249Yes a slight angle either up or down usually helps.... IIRC it is in the Stroptober thread and I know quite a few other mentions in this forum and around SRP

45° is a little steep for my taste but if it is working use itLast edited by gssixgun; 05-19-2013 at 01:09 PM.

Luckily, for me, I've had to play with the angle of my stropping out of necessity as well... we're in the midst of a bathroom remodel, so I've delayed hanging the hook to attach my strop. In the meantime, I've used the door knob, door hinge, toilet paper holder and cabinet knob... each offering a different angle. I've still yet to find the perfect one, but close enough. I guess it's true that necessity is the mother of all invention...
Oh, and I know it's OT, Glen, but seeing your link above made me realize that there is no "Beginner's Tip" for May yet... Just sayin'.(sayin' thanks, though, really)

Thanked: 1185This is why I love a paddle. I can stand, sit, angle up, angle down, move outside, change in a heartbeat. I have 3 hangers and that is about all they do. I should give them an opportunity to change my mind.
Congrats on the straight trip and you should send the DE a post card at least.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
