I just got the basic modular with what came with it. I did get 1 extra felt in case I want to use two different mediums. I mainly got that to put me over the free shipping threshold. IOW, don't get all the extra stuff until you actually need it. You may not live long enough to need it.

Used as linen would be used - or you can use the CrOx on it.

As earcutter noted, as a preliminary to the fine/smooth leather final, or as a repository for the chrom-ox. I haven't done anything with mine yet. So far just using the smooth piece. I have one wool felt impregnated with diamond and the other with chrom-ox. The cool thing is you can always get a replacement to use one with and one without a substance. Referring to the rough leather.

Lynn's design improved the ergonomics far enough that I gave the HA to a friend and sprung for the modular. Really a great tool IME.
I've been stropping with felt pads and lengths 'o leather perched on an old cribbage board resting on my kitchen counter, for years. So, when Jimmy offered me the HandAmerican flatbed base, I was all over it. Having said that, I'd like to order a couple of the SRD replacement pads for their modular strop, and trim the extra 1" from them so they'd fit the HA; however, I was disappointed to learn that SRD doesn't offer anything with the heavy draw I want (like their latigo). At $20 per, they're a bit pricey for me to buy one that isn't truly what I want. In any case, I have a Tony Miller 3" Artisan Horsehide/Red Latigo hanging strop -- love the Red Latigo, rarely use the Horsehide; have to fight the insane voices urging me to cut it to bench-strop length.

Also, I bought a 12" x 24" piece of high-density, rock-hard wool felt online, and cut two 3"-wide strips, which I use with CrO2 and 0.5-micron diamond spray; I'd like to find an appropriate magnetic substrate and learn what the proper adhesive it for joining felt-to-magnet, but haven't met with any success... yet.
You can have everything, and still not have enough.
I'd give it all up, for just a little more.
