The material is a "compressed felt" and is a much better material than the ones that you mentioned.

Here's an example. I have two of these. If you end up wanting to to use diamond spray or something similar, these are great.

The strop material is called hard felt. It is much more dense and stiff than a standard felt material.
Ebay might have suitable material available in a size that would fir your needs.

SRD has them that attach magnetically to their modular paddle strop. I have one for CROX, one for Diamond spray and one that is plain (so far).

The felt that is used normally, is a compressed felt as said, you can buy it from saddle makers.

But craft felt works just as well, when glued to a flat substrate, wood (MDF) or craft foam core for sprays.

If you just want to experiment craft felt glued to foam core board is the way to go. All you are looking for is something flat that will hold the abrasive.

Paper and fabric also work just as well for sprays. SRD sells replacement felt strops for 9 bucks.

hobby lobby has preglued felt strips for .99 cents a piece.this on a balsa block works satisfactorily.if you go to a cobblers supply site you can buy compressed wool in bulk with the adhesive pre applied and is good also .ymmv.cam.
