Can you explain to me the difference with the secondary strop material; webbing, linen, cloth and rough side leather?

Do these all serve the same purpose with different feels or should they be used in combination such as webbing, rough leather and finish on smooth leather.

I see references to all the materials but being new I just don't know the difference.
