    Hi everyone!

I managed to get my strope ready to use, even if I stilla want change a couple of things, when I will find things of appropriate size, material and appearance... might take a while, but now I can use it and, I think, it works really well. It measures about 60cm, and 10 wide, 24inches x 4, for metric system lovers... If I should do it again, I will make it one inch narrower and not so heavy as it tends to knock the door quite loudly...
this is a full grain, ved tanned leather about 3mm thick. Any thoughts on taking care of it? will it need oiling at some point?
check it out and tell me what you think...
    thanks!

    Nice solution! looks pretty sturdy.

Made my own D-rings today out of 6mm brass rod. Will put up the result as soon as I get some pics of the strops.

I thought as well about getting a bras rod and bending it to a D ring shape, I just wasn't sure if I should have welded it or not. I would like to see yours. I might go this way next time, and use brass sheet instead of hinges, which are quite heavy...

Clever use of a piano hinge. I like the finished product. Nice work.
Palm rubbing is the preferred treatment and maintenance of strops AFAIK.
You could rub a very small amount of mink oil, or neetsfoot into your palm and then rub that against the strop. I use that technique on my bridal leather strop and it works quite effectively.
Every few months till its subtle, then as required.
    Cheers.

thanks for the kind words and advice. I made 3 holes on each hinge, so that if necessary, I can put te handle on the other end of the strope. Also is quite hevy, and I think that its weight should help to minimize the cupping if not to prevent. Then if it cups, well, lesson learnt!I have allready some ideas for another one... but what am I going to do with all these strops?? does anyone else have this thing about making strops after getting into to straight razors?

Great thread! Gave me some confidence to try to build a quality strop! Tandy leathers is just north of me in Illinois and there are also a couple of saddle shops nearby that carry some really nice leather.
Have you guys been using them? How they work out for you?

Can I trust ordering strop making material from Tandy? Will the leather be good enough quality? Has anyone done this?
