Thanks again. Third answer pays for all.... its 600 mm the leather piece? Or overall ( including the clip)?

Got a question on the process of softening the canvas strop. It says on the Aframe site "wrapping with Nagura to polish the surface of the canvas strop"
Are they actually saying to rub it down with a fine stone?

    Thanks

It is kind of hard work, but if you will try to do it, please do like below:

Put on body soap (solid one), and wash it away

Put on the canvas strop on the wood board, and pounding with wooden hammer on the round portion of the wood hammer side to kill the tough fibers.

    Washing by brush

Please do the all above processes three times

Figured while I was doing the above and my 3yr old wanted to help, it may just get soft as I want it soon

If you buy one from Aframestokyo they have a paragraph explaining what they suggest. That is washing it, repeatedly. It works, I do it. It does though cause the thing to shrink about an inch, and the leather tab at the bottom of the canvas piece comes off. But is easily re-attached with some pva glue. I do it, but at the same time, if Kanayama has a weakness it is the canvas piece. It is 65 mm as opposed to the rest of the strop which is 68 mm, and is when new too hard.

Thanks Bob, I did wash it 3 or 4 times in the washer. To me it was still quite stiff. I've been using another cotton linen one before I use the Kanayama. My other strops all have nice softer fabrics, which I prefer.
So I figured what the heck, lets try the steps they have and see what happens. The wood mallet my son is using is rounded on top, so no edge "cutting" into the strop. That is a cool one I got years ago for my post and beam chisels. Its Tonka wood, hits like a steel head hammer.

When washing old 100% linen firehose (which is pretty stiff) to make my strops, i always add some fabric softener... then just rinse several times... it sure help loosen yhe fibers!!

I received a 90000 today as a gift from my wife.
And as funny as it sounds, the linen on this one is as soft as the one I have been working on.

Not sure why, but it is more flexible and soft

Not complaining in the least though

wowwwwwww you are just so lucky to have that strop as a gift man! but even luckier to have a wife that gives you such a gift!!!! (with all due respect)

i just ordered my 80K, i was about to pull the trigger on the 90k but after much advise and deliberation stuck to the 80k just a matter of taste of course, but congratulations on that sweet 90k! and i hope then that my 80k also comes with the new softer linen! this is a new batch that was just shipped this week to Takeshi-san, they have not even arrived to Hawaii, so crossing fingers cause that was the only thing that had me thinking... as a matter of fact, i had decided to use only the cordovan and the suede and leave the linen untouched just as an ornament!!!

Also, by now you will have the 80 k and the 90 K right? please send me a PM and tell me if you feel the difference is too big.. oh, and if you feel that the 90K is waaaay toooo muuuuch better, lie to me, cause i have already ordered my 80K and won't be buying a 90 K any time in the next 5 years i think

Wow mate, your bride is a winner! I'm sure you'll notice that stopping on the #10000 is very little different to your new #90000. The #90000 is luxurious no doubt, the extra 60mm in length might be nice, but about the canvas on your #90000. Is it the same width as your canvas from your #10000. The canvas pieces on all the Kanayama strops I have owned (one #10000, 2 #70000's, a #50000 and an #80000). The canvas on all of them was 65 mm wide or 3 mm less wide than the suede and cordovan, which are 68mm wide. The canvas as you most likely know come wrapped in Red Imp plastic sheathing. I don't believe that Kanayama make their canvas piece, they just buy it from Red imp and add it to their leather. Doesn't matter much, but I personally don't like the canvas on Kanayama strops, I treated one as Takeshi suggested and it's usable but has shrunk. I also had to glue back the leather tab. Let us know the width of your canvas when it arrives. Happy stopping and when you put your first razor on the stellar #90000, maybe a shot of whiskey 20 mins beforehand could be wise......lol
    Cheers mate Bob.
