When it comes to strops, I think buying new and buying good is a good idea. If you are new, you don't want a questionable strop as a variable in your shave routine, and it can easily be eliminated. Personally, I have a Tony Miller; it was my first strop and has lasted me 2 years without issue. If and when the time comes to replace it, I'm going to buy the SRD English Bridle. I had the chance to visit Lynn and try out a bunch of strops, including a few TM's and a few SRD's, and I liked the feel of the Bridle the most. It is also Lynn's go-to strop, and I know he wouldn't personally select a strop to use unless he got the best results from it.

I'm not totally up on linen, but my understanding is that it is a bit more aggressive than leather, so using linen can help to maintain your razor's edge to prolong the time between honing. Many members also seem to like pasting linen.
