In Britain if someone is described as 'stroppy' it means they are awkward and bad tempered. Likewise, to be 'in a strop' means to be in a bad mood. It's probably true to say that more people associate the word strop with those descriptions of mood than anything used to sharpen a blade.
We also use the word strop to describe a lifting sling or webbing tow strap. We pronounce it to rhyme with stop.'Living the dream, one nightmare at a time'
