    Question Hanging vs. Paddle

For non-travel use, why is the strop more popular (or more preferred) than the paddle?

For record, they're both strops... the difference is Hanging strop and Paddle strop.

Up until now, I had prefered hanging strops because they were semi-variable.. You could manually adjust the sag/tension/deflection, etc.

However, when SRD came out with the Modular paddle... I haven't touched a hanging strop in a loooong time...

Currrently I prefer the paddle strop just because it's brilliant... Hanging strops are more versatile (outside of the Modular paddle) than paddle strops

I only use a pasted paddle strop for touch ups and a hanging (no-pasted) strop before shaving.

The only thing I like more about the paddle is that it has two sides, so it's possible to use two different pastes. When it comes to holding a paddle or a hanging strop I'd choose the hanging.

I don't know what to look for in the ideal strop.

Is the sag preferred (hanging strop), or flat surface (paddle)?

Does the sag/tension act like a shock absorber to prevent damage to the strop and blade?

You might want to give the stropping wiki a search, but to answer your question

I'd suggest starting with the SRD Modular Paddle (it costs a good amount, but It's my favorite strop, hanging or paddle, hands down)

The sag is generally NOT preferred on EITHER. The main thing with a hanging strop is that you want it pulled tight/taut. Deflection/sag is generally a BAD thing. There are more advanced techniques that can -debateable- get a better edge with the perfect amount of slack... But, until you've been stropping for a long time, keep the strop tight and taut (that doesn't mean wrench your arm out... just don't let it sag)

I'd recommend a paddle so that you don't need to worry about the slack at all, and I'd recommend the modular paddle because I have it, I use it and I LOVE it.

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

I have a bunch, Hanging, Vintage Hanging, Paddles, Loom. They all get you there.
One thing I've found while stopping is not to hold the strop to taught. Now, I know some will disagree, but I think it works better, we're not talking a big loop here, just not so tight that you can bounce a quarter off it, just a little give. My favorite paddle is SRD's, not the modular, but the one with the Premium 1 leather on one side, and the rough leather on the other side. It's a great paddle.
    We have assumed control !

    Hi Snakyjake,

I've changed the thread title as you requested.

As to your question, I think its really personal preference whether people go for hanging or paddle strops. In terms of the sag, you dont want much. Zib puts it well in terms of the tension that you want.

Both types of strop will get you the results you need though, as long as you use them correctly. IE: Roll on the spine, dont put loads of pressure on the blade and make sure you get good contact with the whole edge.

Over and above that, it really is personal preference and what you like the look of. Try a few different types and see which you prefer! Not that I'm enabling you... Much!

I find the hanging strop faster and simpler to use. It also make a great wall decoration in my bathroom when not in use and because of that it takes up no room in my cabinets or on my counter and is always ready to use.

When I'm honing at the table in the kitchen, I'll use the modular paddle. Partly cause it's portable, but also I have 5 or 6 different strops of leather and fabric I can use. They are all different, some with diamond spray or CrOx, others clean.

When shaving, I use the hanging strop that's hanging next to the mirror in the bathroom.
