Is it solid? It looks like you can take it off and put a razor inside?
    That is a complete guess

Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, they made quite a number of strops, for both safety and straight razors. The top models often came with a razor, especially J A Henckels razors, that is what the empty compartment is for in your box.

The flexible models had a sprung side (you should be able to see the springs) and a padded side. They came with a tube of sharpening paste to spread on one side of the strop.

The Allegro is very interesting. A quite logical set-up,especially for travelling.

Thanks,so far these are the best guesses Ive gotten,I'm going to check right now ,that would be a blast if there were a razor in there, one moment....Nope there are two leaf springs under whatever it is. There is a serial number on side 147369,if that helps, but I still don't know what it is,a strop or hone of some sort,Please help!!! Oh,no paste, just belt dressing.
    Thanks

    Hi Griz,

It's got to be a strop - a hone would be rigid (if it wasn't a stone that thin would crack) and neither the padded side nor the sprung side is rigid, although the sprung side is the more rigid of the two and therefore more suited for applying abrasive paste to.

    Regards,
    Neil

    Gentlemen,

here's a photo of the original instructions that came with the strop.
The material is an artificial hone material developed by Allegro specifically for that purpose. They were quite famous for that in the old days and these strops were considered the "Rolls Royce" of the pack.
The company was based in Emmenbruecke, which is close to Lucerne. They closed down in 1976.
    Hope this helps!
